New build, starts up then shuts down immediately

Hi guys, I built a new system yesterday and after reading through all the documentation and grind I finally go to turn it on and the cpu fan and rear LED fan start spinning for half a second then the system goes off immediately.

Here is a list of things I have tried...

Removing the I/O shield as I thought it might have been rubbing and a short.

Removed the RAM and tried powering it on with 2 different 8gb sticks 1 at a time.

Used the power supply from this computer I am using now to rule out a power supply issue.

Had a look round the CPU to make sure no thermal paste had leaked into the socket.

Checked that all the cables were plugged in properly.

Double checked that there were no extra risers behind the motherboard which could cause a short.

Stripped the computer down to make sure the cabling around the case has no wires that are exposed which could cause a short and that there are no loose screws or other metal objects touching the motherboard.

Double checked that the motherboard supports 8th gen Intel processors which it does.

I have exhausted a lot of options and have just tore the whole thing down and re-boxed everything and I am thinking about getting a replacement motherboard but I just want to know if anyone has any suggestions or experience with this type of thing.

I havent built it ontop of the motherboard box with just those things. I would need to jump the power pins on the mainboard to start it wouldn't i? If it done the same thing it would rule out the case being the issue?

plugged 4/8 pin power connector to top of the board? normally left hand side- most just plug in the 24 pin

Yeah I plugged in the 8 pin CPU power cable. I'm thinking its either the motherboard or CPU I just don't know how to figure out if its one or the other.

taken out and reseated CPU? could be upside down.... and i do this about once a month haha

I took it out to check the socket to make sure there was no thermal paste in it, the CPU socket has small round grooves at one side to make sure it can't go in any other way unless you put it in upside down lol

Assuming that fails which im sure it will what do you reckon...CPU or mobo?

no idea, if your got it from ocuk, should be able to rma both and they can test them both

I got the mainboard from amazon althought I got the processor from overclockers.

Just tried that, expected the best tbh but I can officially rule out the case, the problem still exists.

the pain going with two different shops and board vendor cant send board direct to . Personally don think its your CPU

The motherboard lights up when the powers plugged in which gives you a false sense of hope but it could be another circuit on it that's humped. Im going to send the board back to amazon. If anyone has anything else i'd be happy to give it a go up before I send the board back.

I had this issue once and I *THINK* it was when my water cooling leaked and took out the GPU and motherboard - so imo its the motherboard. Obviously not water damaged in this case but maybe some other defect or damage.

Yeah I don't have any water cooling just a stock cooler and I have been handling it like a new born baby so I know its not through me being negligent.

Yeah amazon are giving me a free replacement, just off to the post office now to send this back.

Guys I got the new mobo today what's your thoughts on using the same thermal paste? Or would I have to clean it off the processor and heatsink and reapply?

I don't have an eBay account and having real issues getting isopropyl alcohol 99% online without having to buy 500ml of it for 10-12 quid is there any shops you guys know I can get it from? 500ml for me is overkill.

I'm lazy Nz used vodka and kitchen roll. Wiped first then used roll with vodka the. Another sheet .

Not what you should do but meh . Haha

I was thinking of vodka but I played it safe and got alcohol wipes containing isopropyl alcohol which apparently are perfectly suitable for removing thermal paste.

Well it turns out the motherboard was the issue. I've rebuilt the system and it boots up properly.

Hardware problems aside I've been hit with software ones now lol

I can't get windows 7 running on it then realised it's not compatible with 8th gen Intel chips.

Sometimes I wish I was interested in knitting or something with less bumps in the road lol

Time to hunt for a copy of windows 10 now kinda disappointed I love windows 7

You can use it and just have the Activate Windows watermark if you want. There are options in marketplaces for very reasonable prices. Most tech channels seem to suggest they are legitimate (and explain why).

Yeah I downloaded it last night on a different system and created a boot able USB.

It's not activated but the only limitations are the watermark and the fact you can't change personalisation. Although you can still set wallpapers and lock screens by viewing images through windows 10 photoviewer.

I'll have a look into obtaining a licence soon at least there aren't any time limits like the 30 day limit on windows xp.
