New car for summer fun

Thanks for all the input although not sure about an old Jag tbh ;)

Had a test drive in this one today, '04 plate so a bit older and higher mileage but was in much better condition, still had a couple of parking dings but maybe I'm being too fussy and should be easiliy fixed. Was great fun though, sounded great as well.

Not so sure about the wood interior but looked better in the flesh, however I think the first mod could well be to change it to piano black which would look the nuts ;)

Gonna have think about it overnight as really wanted a newer one with lower mileage but black is a definate possibility !

To a pleb maybe.

Forgetting for a moment the fact that the XJS has the mother of all curses attached to it, namely a Jag badge (meaning that it will break.....frequently and at great cost to it's owner) this leaves us to cover the rest of the car.
They weigh slightly less than Gibraltar.
There's no room inside one.
They drink fuel like you wouldn't believe (assuming you can keep it running)
You have a choice of straight six manual or auto, or a V12 auto only (with a few exceptions).

The wood trim stands out a lot! Well wood effect plastic I believe, what were they thinking at times trying to make a simple modern car all old and luxurious. Some people like it though  and for me it would not be my highest concern, the standard grey bits are a bit drab! Note the uprated MG Momo gearknob in that car as well, when I changed onto one the gear change felt significantly better. The original big silver knob is quite weighty, and in the winter gets to cold to touch, where as in the summer it can a bit warm! At least that Momo looks tidy from the distance, mine is very worn already!

How silver is the front badge on it?

You couldn't just let it lie....

This, in a thread about something that might well have been made at longbridge? Since the end of British Leyland Jaguars are one of the most reliable car brands. The old V12 has a tendency to....well, go on fire, but that's only the old 80s pre-facelift 5.3, if left to neglect, and that's a 20 year old car by now. The straight 6, like I said earlier, will easily give you 200,000 miles if you keep it serviced.

So what? We are talking about soft-tops. Those are for wafting around in with a gentle breeze in your hair, not thrashing around asda carpark like some impreza caveman in a wooly hat.

More room than that MGF. Two more seats too in some cases. Plus the interior isn't tacky plastic. Burr walnut and leather, which unless you're a boy racer with no taste, is a pretty big step up.

Sounds like you got all your info from "your mate dahn the pub" to me.

I am going to post a comment on the XJS.....

My friend had a V12 coupe, the cabin was very tight with less space than my MG. The rear seats were a waste! The car felt old, well it was old, but definitely more luxury than the MG. I didn't really have a long enough ride to see if it was comfortable over distance.

The car sounded like a sewing machine but went as quick as anything in a straight line, corners were a bit rock and role but then it is a cruiser rather than something fun to drive down a B road. My friend eventually spun his into a barrier on a dual carriageway, but it was going to be sold anyway as he was doing 80 miles a day in it in the rush hour and beginning to feel the fuel bill.

Different cars for a different purpose. If I was cruising then maybe the XJS would get a look in, but for every day normal usage and more fun driving then no way!

I'm just saying that his old XJS when not being thrashed sounded somewhere between a grandfather clock and a sowing machine when it ran. A nice light ticking over sort of noise, nice and gentle like a Jaguar should be. Even when pushed a bit it didn't exactly roar like a sports car.

thing is though, sneaky peaky was an impreza caveman in a wooly hat

i just cant see him in a big old boat of an jag. I agree its for wafting around in comfort with the top down.

But thats not what the OP wants ;)

Mazda MX-5
MG-TF
Toyota MR2
Jaguar XJS Convertible

Tell me what looks out of place on this list. 3 cars are capable and cheapish to run fun summer cars and the other is an ageing barge with the maintenance costs of a Footballers Wife.
