New car purchased....

The C2's arent bad cars, I drove one for a while and took it around tracks. Ultimately it will never handle as well as a 106/Saxo. It is very wallowy.

You've basically chucked a fair bit of dosh of money away for something that wont be faster, handle better or likely be any more reliable. The C2 will depreciate a lot too.

Got any mods planned? I'd be rather tempted to lower it and stiffen the suspension up. I know the C2 VTS's had manifold issues but that may of been on the earlier ones.

The problem with "hot hatches" now is that since the saxo/106 theres been a new level of hatches on the market like the astra vxr, r26, focus st/rs etc. Hot hatches used to be 100bhp, now its 200+. IMO a hot hatch is simply a hatchback that you can use for every day but still have loads of fun in it chucking it around a tight b road. In the same way we had supercars, and now have hyper cars, hot hatches have divided into two categories. The c2 vts is a fun little car to chuck around, and if mine hadn't of just been written off, i would have kept it for quite a while more.

To the OP, one very important thing to check before buying the car is the inlet manifold bolts/studs. Its a known problem with the VTS, and WILL happen eventually. Push down on the inlet and if it starts to whistle it means they are loose, you might even hear it on idle without pushing down. Its an expensive fix if done at a dealer, although it is covered by warranty. They will refuse to fix it for free out of warranty, although its a known problem at HQ with every VTS.

It seems the definition is a "Hot Hatch" is a very personal thing.

For example I for one don't buy the "Lots of power + Hatchback = Hot Hatch" definition. I do not really consider a A3 3.2 quattro as a Hot Hatch. It's a powerful hatchback, but it's not a "Hot Hatch" in my book.

It's not something that I think is defined by raw performance figures figures. My first car a 205 XS clocked up 0-60 in around 8.5 seconds (which some people seem to consider quick from earlier comments in this thread!?). I wouldn't have dreamed of labelling it a hot hatch even though it wasn't far off of the performance of the fully fledged hot hatches doing the rounds at the time.

I think there is a distinction between what was hot when it was new and what is hot now.

Interesting read this, some very valid points from both sides :)

the original batch of hot hatches had totally different cars to be compared against, back then people were still driving relatively new Morris Marinas etc so jazzed up fairly fast hatchbacks looked like proper road rockets. Today even most of your run of the mill family saloons are faster than a 80's hot hatch

Enjoy the C2.

Did you not think of the Renault Clio 182/172 whatever them Clio sport things are?

As long as you are happy.

I've never liked how the Clios look to be honest, except the latest shape. They may be the best performing, best handling and best value for money small car out there but I'd never be interested in a car that doesn't excite me every time I look at it.
