Hi all.

I currently have an old i5-6600K and really want to upgrade it to something that can run Elden Ring and allow me to upgrade to Windows 11 if I feel like it.

The rest of my system is fine currently (2070 Super & 32GM Ram)

Obviously though I need a motherboard as well as a CPU and a new fan (One that doesn’t cover Ram slots)

I don’t want to spend a fortune, £500 max (less would be better). Is this possible?

If it is can anyone recommend a board, CPU and fan? I’m not bothered if it’s Intel or AMD.

Thank you.

Yup, easily possible for that money. Any other games you want to play in future? Do you do anything else with the PC?

Is the ram a decent speed?

If the i5 is at stock you could try overclocking it, you might notice a pretty big difference in playability.

AMD alternative

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £451.97 (includes delivery: £0.00)

The only problem is that ryzen likes fast ram and if your ram is ddr4 2400mhz or so speed it will gimp the chips performance. Intel less so.

Intel

2 coolers to choose from. Either will be fine but the sythe should allow more powerful chips to be used later without needing to be replaced and is slanted back so it doesnt block the ram slots.

Thank you all. So definitely Intel over AMD?

I could get them seperately, so CPU this month, board and fan the following if it future proofs it more.

So 12700? K or KF?

If I wait and buy on seperate months, what's the better board and fan to go with it?

Thank you all.

no that's not a great idea. you should get it all in one go. very doable if you shop around for the best prices

12700f

no reason to do this:

12700f £320
msi b660m-a ddr4 £130
jonsbo hx6250 £35

£500 easily doable

Thank you.

I've just been looking at the CPU benchmarks on Passmark and noticed the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X which out performs both Intel chips and is a simialr price, is the Ryzen better or should I stick to the 12700f.

Thanks again.

12700f is a better chip than the 5900x
(and i'm using a 5900x lol)

the 12700f is cheaper and has better single core performance and so, better for your use case...which is: gaming (not passmark lol)

Thank you, I didn't realise there were so many versions of the 12700, I looked here and only the K & KF are available, no F so I thought that was it.

I'll keep a look out for the F then.

Thank you.

12700f is sold elsewhere, as is the motherboard that i've said earlier
shop around :) you're not hand-tied to ocuk
i've also listed the suggested price the etailers should be selling them for to make it easier for you to find (they all have free shipping)

(the jonsbo hx6250 is good value though, so you should definitely get it from ocuk :))
