New CPU/Board help.

12700f is a better chip than the 5900x
(and i'm using a 5900x lol)

the 12700f is cheaper and has better single core performance and so, better for your use case...which is: gaming (not passmark lol)
how about the vulnerabilities that were tooted about on intel that it affects it's real day to day speed? Has that now been resolved? And also is the only way effectively to cool a 12700f a 360 aio so that it doesn't throttle?

i'm assuming that you mean meltdown and spectre? that was years ago has been resolved for quite a while now

12700f uses 180-200w max as it is not a part that can overclock
a 5900x + PBO can pull that much power as well and certainly does not require a 360mm aio

Phoronix tested it and they don't make much difference to 12th gen, I think many of them were baked into the CPU since 10th gen (some 9th gen CPUs had them as well), so the performance impact has been minimal since then.

You can air cool a 12700, but obviously it depends what you're doing. Very long runs of blender are different to gaming.

What cooler are you using with your 6600k? If it's any good then all you may need is a updated mounting kit rather than a complete new cooler.

I was going to post this on the CPU section but probably better to continue here.

I will get the 12700 but when it came to affixes I just assumed the higher the letter the more powerful but is that incorrect?

Does the F stand for no iGPU? so the 12700 F & FK don't have intergrated graphics but the 12700 & K do?

If that is correct how important is the iGPU?

Thank you.

Thank you.

I don't stream or content create. I use my PC to play games, browse the internet and use TH-U (Guitar amp sim), I don't even watch movies or TV on it much anymore due to smart TV's.

So as recommended I'll get an F version and save a few bob.

One last question, I've had my 6600K for over 6 years now and intend to keep the 12700F for the same amount so assume I can add a few quid and to help future proof a bit would you recommend the Z690 or the B660? and any other motherboard recommendations? (I don't need WiFi, to be honest I'm not sure why anyone would need it on a desktop PC)

Thank you.

Would either of these be a better board than the msi b660-a ddr4 as they are on sale and a similar price:

ASUS ROG Strix B660-F Gaming WiFi Intel® LGA 1700 ATX (DDR5, I have access to 16GB)

MSI PRO Z690-P DDR4 Motherboard ATX LGA 1700

Thank you.

Would remove the reference to a competitor.

I had a super quick look: I think the B660-F is a higher end board, it has better audio for example and 3 M.2 slots, but isn't it DDR5?

The Z690-P primary PCI-E slot is 5.0 (4 on the B660).

Wasn't thinking, thank you.

Yes the B660-F is DDR5 and I have access to 16GB but I'm not sure it's worth it.

As for the Z690-P primary PCI-E slot being 5.0 (4 on the B660), would that be an issue for my 2070 super or sound blaster Z card?

I'm happy to get the msi b660m-a ddr4 I just wondered when I saw those prices whether it was worth looking at them instead (plus you can pay in installments which is nice)

Thank you.
