New CPU not working with upgrade

do you have your old cpu?
if you do, pop that back in
if the pc boots with the old cpu then the bios update has taken
if the pc does not boot with the old cpu then you've messed up the bios update and have to do it again
The pc boots with the old cpu. I feel like I'm running out of options

Dead cpu and or psu. I have a faulty psu and it wouldn’t boot and just gave cpu led on board.
It it boots with your old cpu… so dead cpu
Next time I'm at my friend's house I'm gonna try it in his pc as he has the same cpu, if it doesn't work then I'll send it back. Is there any other way to test for a dead cpu

nope, other than with a known working system.
from what you've told us, there's no reason to suspect your computer isn't fully working...so i would highly suggest you go ahead to RMA it straight away (esp if it's a used part...the longer you delay the higher the chance the seller can get away with selling a defective part)
I just noticed a slightly bent pin I'll get a photo, how can this be fixed

Does it fit snuggly into the mobo or is it sticking out slightly?
The CPU should sit into the socket without any force applied.
I haven't been putting any pressure when seating it, I've been bringing it as low as I can and then letting it seat itself, and I've only been lifting it straight up when removing it

thats something that just happened as you would have struggled to put it in the socket.
use a back card in the pin row to genteelly move it back.

can i ask when you got the CPU from and was the box fully sealed?
there is a well known amazon CPU swap scam
It was from amazon, box was fully sealed though

Oh my, you're not having any luck are you :(
Literally couldn't have any worse luck if I tried, it's going to a specialist tomorrow and likely will be getting a new motherboard ffs. Pc is staying unplugged for the night.
Thank you all for the help it's much appreciated.

silver lining and all that i guess.
also to add, i also wouldn't trust whatever PSU you are currently using.

what i would do:
1) instead of RMA-ing the new 5800x to AMD, I would raise a ticket to Amazon and get the CPU refunded
2) replace PSU
3) get your ram checked in another system
4) your current CPU and mobo is done for, if you have the spare cash, then there's no point replacing them for a like-for-like on the AM4 platform especially if the ram is toast too - i would hop onto a new AM5 build instead (of course, finances dictating, it may well be that you may have to get another AM4 build if the finances are tight)
My current psu is a corsair cx550 either silver or bronze, someone is coming to look at the pc tomorrow and check all the connected parts, I'm gonna be getting a msi b550 tomahawk as the new motherboard and pray to anything that will listen that my new graphics card and ram sticks aren't done for.

Also after the crossover the lights and fans were still on. So I might have got lucky in that regard

Edit 2 - I have no more posts for the next 20 hours so pm me and I can answer there

The Tomahawk series was pretty popular when AM4 was current, a lot of them are still running happily. hard to answer "worth it" though, without knowing the context. Is it worth spending a lot of extra money over a similar board just to get a Tomahawk? No, it is not.
What would you recommend? My budget is around £100-200

Can you give some context of what the board is for? This thread is a whopper.

Personally, if you have £200 to spend on an AM4 motherboard you should probably be looking at AM5 instead.

I wouldn't want to spend much more than £100, but does something like the Gigabyte B550 Gaming X have sufficient features for you?

The Strix -F, Tuf B550-Plus, Tomahawk and Aorus Elite are all higher tier boards, but if you don't need the features (e.g. a beefier VRM, 2.5 Gb LAN, higher-end sound, SPDIF) there's not much point.
My pc is for gaming, all the specs are in the first couple posts. I'll be 100% honest and say I have no clue as to what to look for in pc specs but the Gigabyte one supports my graphics card. My dad is now saying about the Tomahawk 650 to keep options open for future upgrades. What's your thoughts on this?

Have you managed to determine what parts of the original computer survived the explosion?
I'm assuming, because it kept running with nothing shutting off by itself, that the rest of the parts are fine minus the motherboard and possibly (old)cpu, and I have also been told that there is a good chance they are fine because it was only a crossover on the backplate. But if anything else is done for, there is still warranty on them.

Are you buying a new AM5 CPU? You can't fit AM4 CPUs into a B650 board.

Ah, okay. From what I can see your requirements are basic and pretty much any board (that isn't awfully cheap/rubbish) would do fine.
I'll let him know that, I didn't even realise.

Yeah pretty much, with the msi b550, would that have out of the box compatability with the ryzen 7 5800x because I dont think I could stomach going through what I went through with the last motherboard
