Yes that was covered a week ago. This board launched at the time of the 3000 series so does not have 5000 support out of the box.
Not saying you are wrong about the cooler being to tight, but looks like the backplate is a standard AMD plate so the cutout should be perfect for the board.I don't think the psu is the cause of this, more like the cooler backplate was too tight and crushed or loosened that capacitor or whatever that is which caused the short. Usually the backplate would have a cutout big enough to avoid any chips on the back of the cpu socket or at least be foam backed to protect the chips. I reckon any RMA of that board would blame the backplate and hence user error so would decline the RMA.
I would recommend not using that backplate with the new board.
The Tomahawk series was pretty popular when AM4 was current, a lot of them are still running happily. hard to answer "worth it" though, without knowing the context. Is it worth spending a lot of extra money over a similar board just to get a Tomahawk? No, it is not.Quick question about a new motherboard, is the MSI MAG TOMAHAWK B550 worth it?

Can you give some context of what the board is for? This thread is a whopper. What would you recommend? My budget is around £100-200
Have you managed to determine what parts of the original computer survived the explosion?Quick question about a new motherboard, is the MSI MAG TOMAHAWK B550 worth it?
My pc is for gaming, all the specs are in the first couple posts. I'll be 100% honest and say I have no clue as to what to look for in pc specs but the Gigabyte one supports my graphics card. My dad is now saying about the Tomahawk 650 to keep options open for future upgrades. What's your thoughts on this? Can you give some context of what the board is for? This thread is a whopper.
Personally, if you have £200 to spend on an AM4 motherboard you should probably be looking at AM5 instead.
I wouldn't want to spend much more than £100, but does something like the Gigabyte B550 Gaming X have sufficient features for you?
The Strix -F, Tuf B550-Plus, Tomahawk and Aorus Elite are all higher tier boards, but if you don't need the features (e.g. a beefier VRM, 2.5 Gb LAN, higher-end sound, SPDIF) there's not much point.
I'm assuming, because it kept running with nothing shutting off by itself, that the rest of the parts are fine minus the motherboard and possibly (old)cpu, and I have also been told that there is a good chance they are fine because it was only a crossover on the backplate. But if anything else is done for, there is still warranty on them.Have you managed to determine what parts of the original computer survived the explosion?
Are you buying a new AM5 CPU? You can't fit AM4 CPUs into a B650 board. My dad is now saying about the Tomahawk 650 to keep options open for future upgrades. What's your thoughts on this?
Ah, okay. From what I can see your requirements are basic and pretty much any board (that isn't awfully cheap/rubbish) would do fine.My pc is for gaming, all the specs are in the first couple posts. I'll let him know that, I didn't even realise. Are you buying a new AM5 CPU? You can't fit AM4 CPUs into a B650 board.

B550 does not automatically have compatibility with Ryzen 5000, but realistically they all should by now.Yeah pretty much, with the msi b550, would that have out of the box compatability with the ryzen 7 5800x because I dont think I could stomach going through what I went through with the last motherboard
Good to hear you are back up and running.Felt like I should update, since my last post I have got my new motherboard, gigabyte b550 gaming x v2, and I have successfully installed everything including the new cooler and all is working. Thank you to all who helped and/or gave their two cents, it's much appreciated.
