New essential Android apps thread

Interested by all these comments guys, as a rule of thumb would you say Google Music is better than the other big music streaming services, namely Spotify and Deezer?

If you know what you want to listen too Play Music is outstanding. However I find Spotify much better for listening to "Radios" and finding new music.

I'd sub to Play Music again myself if I knew what I liked. I should really start favouriting music more.

I prefer Spotify, but then I do most of my listening on my PC so having a dedicated app is a must. Hate using browsers to listen to music.

The browser thing is my main gripe with Deezer/Google. Deezer almost brings my Chrome to a complete standstill

Is there a way to remove the 'quick reply' function in the latest Whatsapp? It's so annoying for it to only show the last message, usually it's someone doing a smiley face so serves little purpose.

You can disable it for inviduals and groups in the Settings part of the app but it doesn't seem to 'stick' for me and I still get the quick reply window. It is quite frustrating because for some reason it locks up my 6P and I have to fiddle around until I can unfreeze it.

I'd thought about how annoying it was at times, usually lying on my back in bed or too often at the gym, that it would occasionally rotate when I didn't want it to. But of course there are times, like in Gallery, that you need it to rotate...

I think this has joined by 'must have' list now.

I have a free outlook.com email account that got upgraded to exchange yesterday so I've tried configuring the gmail app with it to get push notifications but it keeps defaulting to IMAP even when I select exchange???

I tried the stock android email app and that works fine but the colour is horrible and I gather it won't be updated/supported any more. Any ideas on how to get my outlook account working with gmail? I tried the outlook app but it was beyond awful. :p

edit: I managed to fix this myself with a manual setup. I had to prefix the email address with a backslash like \[email protected] and use eas.outlook.com as the server.

Where's that setting please? I've trawled the Whatsapp settings menu for it but can't seem to see it. The only one I think relates is the popup notification, but those are set to off

That popup notification is what I was referring to - well I thought that was the setting to disable the quick reply window but as you've no doubt experienced - they're already set to off and the quick reply still persists :/

Another nice update to Google Keyboard today, swipe across the space bar to move the cursor & swipe left from the delete button to highlight whole words for deletion.

Loving google keep at the moment, really useful and syncs across all devices and my desktop. My new note-taking app of choice and good for reminders too.

Did you know you can do reminders in Google Calendar on the web now? You always used to be able to on your device, but they now sync to the web (like, duh!). You can also go to your calendar on the web and add them whcih is really useful. I use Calendar for my reminders (I like seeing them in my calendar) and Keep for everything else. I agree about Keep. Love it. Love being able to archive stuff too, I presume it stays there for all eternity and is searchable?

OK, I've just got the Google Keyboard update and I'm ****ed if I can find where to enable the number row. Any suggestions?
I mainly use swiftkey or swype but I have google keyboard installed so had a quick look. Think I've figured it out but what a ballache just to add a number row! Here's what I did.

Hold the comma key until the settings cog pops up, then drag your finger over to the settings --> click google keyboard settings --> Preferences --> Custom input styles --> Click the + sign near top right corner and add 'language' as UK and 'Layout' as PC --> Your phone will probably reboot now so switch it back on and go into the keyboard settings again --> This time click 'Languages' --> Disable 'use system language' and enable 'English (UK) (PC)' from the list and then it should work.

Good luck!
