Hi guys my current spec is just over 3 years old now and coming to the point where I fancy an update

OCZ-VERTEX2 60GB SSD with boot drive
2 Samsung 1TB hard drives raided think 1035j or close
Intel Quad core Q6600
MSI P35 Neo-F
Sapphire Radeon 6950 GDDR5 2GB
650W Antec neo power
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200S
Antec 900 case

Above is my current spec will also be looking for a new case that could be a bit more silent.

Looking to be able to play games like BF3 and FM.

I have a budget of £400-£500

Would be grateful for any tips.

If i was you try to sell the CPU +MOBO+RAM so when it IB is released you will have some extra cash for the new setups.

I suggest getting a MSI twin frozer 7850 which is priced atm at £209.99 at overclockers. You can overclock that baby to get 7950 performance which is double the price.

The GPU http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-154-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=411

Get this MOBO for IB: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-390-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2261 - £101.

Kingston hyperx 8gb Low Profile memory so you can install huge aftermarket heatsinks: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-094-KS
39.99

That comes in total of under £350. That should leave you more then enough room for the CPU, the IVy bridge equivilent of the 2500k might be released arounf the £180-£200 mark.

The new CPU will have lower temps which means more overlcocking slap on this CPU aftermarket heatsink, you can get EASILY a 4.5ghz overclock with this £25 cooler. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-001-GD&tool=3

I don't think spending £200 on a 7850 is a good idea, as it is similar performance to the 6950, why not another for CF?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Club3D HD 6950 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (CGAX-69548A) £175.99
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £173.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £101.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CML8GX3M2A1600C9) £39.95
Total : £503.32 (includes shipping : £9.50).

According to this:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-6950-crossfirex-review/14
a 650W PSU should be okay with 6950s CF, though a new PSU might not be a bad idea.

Just an option anyway! Of course if you can wait for Ivy-bridge then why not!

not to worried about the gfx I know can always come back to that at a later stage. I guess the point about the 7850 is I could sell my 6950 to go towards the new gfx.

One thing I will say i do think I may need a new case its a bit loud the antec 900.

Also would it really be worth it to keep the raid I have you would be better to use SRA?

Fair enough. How does the 6950 handle the games you play at the moment? Do you play at 1920x1080p?

If you're not too worried about a new GPU right now, maybe get a solid CPU/RAM/Motherboard set up then you can change the GPU later?

As for the RAID, I'd say as you've got an SSD boot drive you probably don't need the RAID as they're mainly for storage?

I think it does ok some on another site said i might see better results once the other stuff has been upgraded. I play at 1920x1080/1200 for some reason get some games that dont like 1080.

The raid is only between the 1tb drives in raid 1, but plan on using dropbox more so no really worry about losing things on that front.

I also need to think about a new optical drive as the current one is failing.

and the last one for now How much do you think I could get for my stuff above?

Yeah that's why I though maybe upgrade the CPU/Motherboard as this may help push your 6950 a bit further :)

New optical drives aren't expensive:

OCUK

Samsung [if you prefer branded]

Unfortunately you're not allowed to do 'price checks' outside of the members market.

Right guys thought I would up this thread again.

Would you guys still recommend the above items

Will be purchasing a Corsair 550d case, the rest is all up in the air i guess

Hi again,

sorry having re-read the OP I realise you wanted a new case too? This one has a fan controller built in :)

Am I right in thinking you'll keep the GPU for now?

That is correct The ones above are just a bit too much at this time doesnt help that I dont know how much I would get for my current stuff.

In regards to the case I picked the Corsair 550d due to all the silencing form.

Would I also be right in thinking that I would need a new Win7 disk? The one on this pc was oem

sorry I remember reading about the case choice, but forgot somehow

I'm never sure about that - I *think* the OEM might work okay, hopefully someone else will know.

I've edited the above. Cooler isn't something you need now, and that motherboard is a bit cheaper [no proper CF or SLI support, but fine for a single GPU set up :)]

Would it not be an idea to have that on a motherboard so its on if i do decide to go down that route at a later stage,

Would I see any benefit in waiting a few days for Ivybridge to come out?

I think if i was really going for cost I would have gone with a lot cheaper case. I am tempted by the gfx card due to the 10% voucher and being able to sell parts on.

Would really like to know about windows 7 guess i could always give it a go and order a new copy if needs be.

in regards to the gfx if I was to go down the route of improvement, what would i be looking at considering I have the 6950 2gb card now.

Well you're likely to get the best improvement with another 6950, which your PSU should be okay with.

A 7950/7970 would be a good improvement -but that's £300+

Done a little bit of changing going to wait for Ivy to come out over the weekend and get the 3570k

But added these parts

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-009-CR

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-041-AR

All i need now is a internal card reader then think I am good to go unless you guys can spot a floor with what I have.

In regards to the gfx will leave that for time being and look at upgrade at a later stage.
