So I went away while it was installing and have come back to this?
What now then? Nothing is ever simplecrap we may need drivers during install.
OK, power down - disconnect the HDD (best to only have one drive connected).
Looking for driver we will need so that it intsalls drivers for AHCI - or you can install as IDE - for the Vertex 2 probably very little difference.
We're going for simple - it;s your brothers PC - and speed gains for AHCI would be negligible plus we can't update drives firmware (safely) and we've yet to ascertain that it's stable (checked its read/write etc with software)

Format the biggest partition right?did you:
delete all partitions
new
format
install on largest partition.
Before we had the trouble of getting in to BIOS? Yeah I'm sure I did.but...

Did you delete partion, new and format before starting the new install?
Confirm that you're sure and let it do its stuff.
