Balls.
We could try the BIOS recovery with it out of the case - but you would need to connect the power lead from the case.
Power lead?

One of the finicky cables that fits into the PW+ and PW- pins.Power lead?
Haha I'll try anything at this point!Yes, that was my next surprise for you after getting you confident enough to take the MB out of the case.
I figured you would be in the mind of - 'in for penny in for a pound' by this stage
Not powering on when I press the case power button, not sure if I've got them plugged in right. One of the finicky cables that fits into the PW+ and PW- pins.
Definitely. No one can tell us we haven't tried can they mate.Worth a shot.
Almost 4 years.. hasn't been moved once since it was installed back in 2013.How long has the HS been sat on the CPU untouched?
Nope - and kudos for hanging in there. Lots of people would have bowed out long ago. But hopefully you've learned a lot for your next build - so not all bad.Almost 4 years.. hasn't been moved once since it was installed back in 2013.

I suppose I could buy some but if it ends up not working it's a bit of a waste isn't it.Ideally we would clean the HS and CPU with isopropyl alcohol and then take out CPU - re-sit CPU and then pea size blop of thermal paste in middle of CPU and reattach HS.

How sure are we it's the motherboard at the moment?
