2 new drives arrived today. Rather thoughtfully of the courier, he's pre-thrown my HDDs into a wall :o

Annoying!

I'm sure the HDDs are fine, but i'm still going to return them purely because if either of them do ever fail, i'll only kick myself for not returning them when i could :p

Being overly paranoid, or would you all do the same?

I'd never trust those. I've had hdds die by falling less than a meter onto a carpet, muchless a blow that left digs in the frame!

They must have been damaged before they were posted as they were tightly bubble-wrapped and seemed pretty secure when i got em.

Glad it's not just me being anal :D

never get how things like this happen. if the box was damaged how does the courier keep a straight face when handing the box that's in 10 pieces over to you?!?

Moreover if they were wrapped and secure upon delivery what the hell happened before despatch?

If the head was parked away from the platter, as is the case in all modern drives, they are probably fine. I'd run a full surface scan in the diagnostic program. If the surface scan is fine and they are benchmarking ok, there's no point in wasting time and postage.

Some of the Alu could be still cracked, so once the drives are installed there is a possibility that metal fragments could come of the drive when in use... Most drives vibrate a little remember.

These metal fragments could then possible short out something out if you were unlucky...

I RMA that fast.
Even if they are working fine and you use them and they fail a year later.
Assuming they got more than 1 year warranty and you tried to RMA it to manufacturer,
since they dont know what happenned to the drive they might deny your RMA saying
you abuse it due to the physical damage on the drive.

Very good point.

My new WD Caviar Black died a couple of days ago, after taking it out of my machine I noticed one corner was dented and folded over.

You've got to wonder how these things happen when the drives are so well protected, the damage must have been done prior to packaging, I also had a heatsink showing similar damage while still in the bubble pack

Definitely return them under Distance Selling Regulations, RMA will take longer.
