New headset : Pimax Crystal

I think it's safe to say the Crystal has the best display in a consumer hmd. He's pinned a comment on his vid saying he later cured the low fps he was getting.

Total including VAT and shipping is €1,778.56 (including a deduction for the preorder price and a $50 shipping coupon).

I was order 60 something on day 1
i pre-ordered on day 3, swaying between buying it or not, your feedback will be greatly appreciated!
my price will be the same as yours minus $400 as i have a $300 off coupon and a current pimaxian $100 discount :p

Tetiana of DiscoVR whilst obviously being an avid VR fan and very experienced with VR in general is not (imo) a "techy" VR user, it's no surprise she had some issues with her Crystal. Pimax hmd's are not as plug and play as Meta hmd's for example. Pimax hmd's suit people who like to fiddle with settings etc and don't mind troubleshooting issues that pop up from time to time. I've found once past the initial setup phase they just work most of the time without issue.

Crystal arrived unexpectedly today (was supposed to be this Friday), I’ve opened the box and got things charging but unfortunately I need to look after the kids for a bit before I can have a proper look.

Off the bat though pimax has been a little pimax. I received a service ticket the other day thanking me for my patience and giving me a $30 coupon, but informing me that due to production problems my unit is shipping with plastic lenses (what most of the beta testers got) and the glass lenses will be sent out separately… and that it is also missing the power hub which will be sent out separately.

On the other hand, it got sent with the more expensive fibre optic cable and from what I gather they may be considering changing out the second pair of higher ppd lenses for the more recently developed wide fov lenses instead… so not all bad.

Either way, it has arrived safe and sound… albeit not entirely complete. From the brief look I had in the AIO mode through the plastic lenses though everything is sharp and clear so as long as I get the glass replacements within a reasonable time frame I’m not overly bothered.

Looking forward to hearing about your first impressions with using it.

Despite wanting to in my heart i don't think i'm buying a crystal as it stands, imo there's just too many negatives for such a large outlay.
Edit: and 1/2 hour after making this post i get an email from Pimax inviting me to complete the payment for my pre-order so they can ship me a Crystal :(

So two things to update.

Firstly I got an update to pimax play, to 1.11 and this has significantly reduced CA on the plastic lenses for me. I still have a bit of a focal length problem and some mild distortion as before, but the CA has definitely been significantly reduced. Still not like super duper great but I would totally be ok with the levels I now have.

Secondly pimax acknowledged the issues in this update and say glass lenses will be sent out immediately. Immediately clearly has various definitions though because I’ve still been told by support that they will be sent at some unspecified “later” point.

Good to hear of progress. I'm not buying 1 right now but once the product matures i may buy in the future.

I really really hate these Crystal controllers. The tracking is the worst I've ever seen in VR and none of the buttons map to games properly. Any suggestions? Any way to get my Index controller and lighthouses to work independently?
Pimax are supposed to be making a lighthouse faceplate that fits over the Crystal so you can use Index controllers and basestations, not sure when it'll be ready though.

My god does anyone know how to get these crap Crystal controllers to work properly in ANY VR PC GAME.

Most of the time the buttons don’t even do anything and the other part of the time they lose tracking with full battery and disappear.

I absolutely loath these Crystal controllers and looking for ways to get Index controllers working with Lighhouses.
I don't doubt your experience of those controllers it's just perplexing that some people, notably Sadleyitsbradley and MRTV said ages ok they're basically just about ok, months ago. Have seen others more recently say they were ok. No-one said they were Index controllers standard. Have seen others say they were crap also. They have mixed reviews. They are basically a Qualcomm reference design and Quest 2 controller copies, how did Pimax screw this up? They had to just manufacture them to an existing design afaik.

any pimax crystal owners willing to let me demo the headset? will help with purchase decision :D
Pretty sure i've read online somewhere that Pimax will be doing more roadshows with the Crystal in the EU and UK, can't remember when or where though, if you're interested contact Pimax through their website. Pimax said on discord yesterday that the Crystal will be available from Amazon in august, so you could buy/try from there and return it if it's not what you want.

My Pimax Crystal has been on pre order for weeks,i paid my deposit and waited. Two weeks ago i got the email that my order was ready for dispatch and it was time to pay the £1,676.75.I paid with PayPal,i've not heard anything back as yet.
I used the link from The Vr flight sim guy on youtube.
iirc there's about a 3-4 week wait between paying in full for the Crystal and receiving it, but i imagine you should have some sort of receipt or confirmation after making full payment, have you got one? if not, contact Pimax support through their website - https://pimax.com/support/ there's a chat window you can use if they're online or create a support ticket.

Apparently the pimax crystal is coming to amazon in August?
that's what pimax said in an AMA on their discord channel the other day, i assume they meant amazons worldwide and not just usa for example. although i wouldn't put your house on it being august, pimax are notoriously unreliable when stating timelines.

MY Crystal has the up graded glass lenses and DMAS speakers,i might not even open mine.I might jusst sell,to be honest i was happy with my G2.

What will i need to upgrade my PC.

You could also return it, the terms of returns are on the Pimax website but iirc you have 14 days to initiate a return and you'll lose $100 of your purchase price because of a "restocking fee". I've not seen any Crystals directly for sale in the UK but have seen a few USA 1's being sold on reddit and Ebay, they seem to be selling for more or less what they paid for them.

For your pc i'd say you'd see the most gains with a gpu upgrade but hey i'm not saying you won't be able to enjoy your Crystal with your current spec, it's just your spec seems like the minimum spec according to Pimax so i guess with demanding sims like msfs you'd have to turn settings down whereas with well optimised games like alyx you'd be able to run in all its glory.

I'm not well up on pc specs,i mean i know nothing about gpu s.Can you give me some idea on an upgrade, without breaking the bank.Maybe a good used one off ebay.i just don't know what to look for.
Note i don't own a Crystal but do own a Pimax 8KX. Have a look around this website :

You can see your gpu is pre-selected and compared against an nvidia 3080, it gives various stats for performance data as you scroll down the page. you can change the gpu's you want to compare to on that page so have a play around.

personally i would aim for a nvidia 3080 or amd equivalent minimum for using with a Crystal, overclockers sell them, B grade or brand new, you may see them on the members market on here but you don't have the 1000 posts needed to access it. yes ebay will sell them. amd gpu's are good value but in some respects aren't thought to be quite as good for vr and might not be compatible with your Crystal so check 1st (your current amd gpu is compatible afaik).

if you decide to keep your Crystal or atleast try it why not just see how you get along with your gpu 1st? you might find it acceptable? @Zeeflyboy might be able to offer more perspective as he has a Crystal (not sure with which gpu though).

I bit the bullet and bought a new pc,it'll be delivered this wednesday.Specs.
Intel core i9-12900kf.16 Core,32GB corsair DDR4 Ram.
RTX 4090 24 GB.
2TB.
Nothing fancy,should be ok though.
"Nothing fancy"....That's a beast!

The flight sim guy has got his eye tracking now,so it must be available to everyone who has a crystal.Should it not.
afaik I think it's still in beta so only a select few have it, it's a good sign though.

It's took me a while to set things up,all i can say is fantastic. The weight of the pimax didn't bother me,but i do have a strong neck and shoulders though. The thing that bothers me after a good fly around is my back, that does hurt.I think i'm gonna have to find a comfy car seat that i can fit to my rig,i had one out of a camper van but i threw it out when i turned motion platform.I could sit on that for hours, but it was to heavy.
Have you used the controllers yet? If so what do you think of them?
