New Insurance Groups

Same as mine, group 34, with a vw golf mk5 gti.. It's currently a group 17, so with a 2 1/2 times the group it *might* turn out to be a bit cheaper.

good old skoda mk2 vrs was 15 and now 30

why is the golf 2 groups higher?performance is almost identical..same engine, parts should be similar..do they group the golf higher because its more likely to be nicked or damaged by thieves?
or do VW charge more to repair stuff?

I can't see this is going to be good for me insuring an MX5 with no ABS or power steering (least it's light I suppose) and certainly not the Accord Estate which is heavier than 6 houses!

How does that page actually work? I want to check out for a 2000 reg Mondeo ST24, but can't for the life of me understand what to enter.
You don't have to fill in all of the questions. Just fill in Ford, Mondeo and the year for example and click submit.

I wonder if the new insurance groups will actually mean something or be as pointless as the last system.

Example: It costs me less to insure my group 12 Merc than my old Group 10 Primera??

Skyline GTR - was 20 now 50 :( doesnt bode well for my GTT, as that means the GTR is going to cost the same as . . well the Zonda, Enzo, F1 . . rubbish :(

Well to be honest, I would be very supprised it an Enzo comes in at any less than 50 out of 50 on an insurance, but hey, maybe they get crashed so rarely that actually they are cheaper!

Just cause a car is the same group doesn't mean its going to cost the same does it ;)

Someone who 'owns' a GTT should know how this works

At the top end of the scale insurers will use % loadings.

So Skyline - straight 50.

Then Enzo - 50 plus 500% loading

Not all 50's are the same, much as not all 20's were the same on the old 20 group format.

But I thought that was exactly the point of this new system, to differentiate between the group 20 cars? Seems a little pointless if they are just going to lump all the top end cars in group 50 again . .

I think it's more gearing towards fine tuning the low to mid range cars.

Agree it all seems pretty pointless at the high end when only moderately fast cars are a 50 but there you go.

Just my opinion but as said before, the old group ratings didn't mean that much to me, as everything seemed to fall in the 15-20, a bit like car tax. I don't think they fully utitlised all 20 groups at all. It's kind of silly that u move up a group by .1 of a ltr of the same car in the lower band, yet if u drive say a stock RX7, u are in the same group as someone in a veyron.

Surely it would make more sense to lump all the slow cars into a group and the faster ones in a wider range. I have a bad feeling that most sports cars will still fall in the 50 area, which is pointless.

Buying a Skyline isn't very hard these days but the running/petrol/insurance costs really add up very quickly . .

I think it'll be a while until I add an Enzo to my garage ;)
