Looks like Intel might finally launch a discreet GPU - should be interesting, possibly

Yeah, especially now AMD are gone, hope they fare better against Nvidia, will take them some time though.

I thinks it's good to get another player back in the mix, 3dfx, Matrox, Via (eww), Kryo etc all disappeared from the market (amoungst others) - and competition is ultimately good for us

AMD isn't niche. Nvidia technically have the "lead" with the 2080ti but 99% of people wont pay that much for a GPU so it's irrelevant.

AMD hardware is also in every console and they are overtaking Intel for CPUs.

amd pulled funding into cpus for a few years and look where they ended up. now their gaining ground and making money in cpus and back where they should be competing i think we'll see a lot of talent and funding swing back into the gpu division. the current crop of gpus whilst not going toe to toe with nvidias top offering certainly show AMD are not a million miles off the pace. couple that with the complete dominance in the console market means for gaming i'd be considering AMD to be there or thereabouts within the next cycle or 2

I was referring to VR and compute, not AMD itself.

VR is still rather expensive for what it is, and only useful in certain types of games. I don't think it's the future, not yet.

Kyle Bennet, founder of HardOCP, is joining Intel and is undoubtedly involved in their discrete GPUs. I just hope he gets them to include their Silicon Photonics technology: 100 Gbps is more than double the 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 can do and no compression will be necessary.
