New look England squad (vs Hungary 11/08/10)

Not sure that's necessarily fair, the reason most of the best English players play in the English league is:

-It's their home country, why go abroad and have to learn a new language, culture etc if you don't have to
-EPL is awash with cash meaning you get paid very well to play in England
-EPL is by far the most successful league in terms of producing CL semifinalists in recent years, it's a great opportunity to play at the pinnacle of world football
-Plenty of top world stars play in the EPL reinforcing the fact that it's a great league to be a part of (reason being irrelevant - could be £££££, could be competition, who knows)

Don't forget Italy won the World Cup with a largely 'home-schooled' team.

Playing abroad doesn't make you a great player, I mean England have Pennant, Kazim-Richards, Derbyshire and other such worldbeaters plying their trade overseas, is it really a sign of greatness?

"best English players" have proven time and time again that they're not that good on the International front.

Since '66 England have done "quite" well in Italia '90. Nothing else.

It's a funny squad to say the least. How do players like Carlton Cole, Zamora and Walcott not be good enough for a W/C Squad yet here we are 8 weeks later and they could be

I would have liked to have seen Adam Johnson put in there as well

Did you not see England's total failure at the word cup?

The "better" players played so bad you may as well try anybody that qualifies for England now.

What totally baffles and frustrates me is players like Ronney, today he was good for Manyoo but was dire for england at the WC...

That's it pick Rooney out (or Ronney as he is now called)

He was shocking at the WC I agree, so was Gerrard, Lampard, Ronaldo, Torres........

Their teams should drop them all

I hope Daniel Sturridge gets an opportunity at some point. He looks promising to me. Strong, fast and good ability on the ball. Perhaps a loan move would be good for him.

Yup he looks a player Sturridge, was miffed when Chelsea bought him to be honest.

I can't see them sending him out on loan, I think they may well need him this season.

Well at least they took something away from the world cup, things need to be changed up a bit.

They also need to get rid of Rooney and pay them all less, but that's a personal rant I'll not go into.

Do go into it, I'm interested to know.

MU are always to blame for England doing badly.

United > England.

Putting Scott Parker to one side, I'm disappointed not to see Lee Cattermole in the squad either, I think he has kind of tenacity and energy we badly lacked in the middle of the park at the world cup.

I really don't care what message Capello is trying to send across with this selection though. As Lawrenson/Dixon said on Football Focus at the weekend, and love them or hate them, they were spot on here: the only thing that needs to change is the system. I don't care who the personnel are particularly but there have to be 3 central midfielders in my opinion, and I would prefer two of them to be true holding midfielders given how much Cole/Johnson love to bomb-on. If that means playing only Lampard or only Gerrard, so be it.

Capello is ridiculous....he drops Walcott for the World Cup...and then recalls him because he's obviously been utterly amazing since.
It's a friendly. Of course you want to try fringe players in a game that's not important.

I must really be missing something here, because this is exactly the kind of game where he should be trying the likes of Walcott, Wilshere, Zamora, et al.

Italia '90 is a case of massive rose-tinted specs. We played better in both '96 and '98.

Yes. Lampard & Gerrard should never play again. Ronney needs to be benched for 2 years.

I would rather play any of the following: DeFoe, Crouch, Owen, Andy Carrol, Agbonlahor or Bent.

We need to blood in Adam Johnson, Wiltshire, Walcott, Milner, Cahill, Richards, Hart and/or Foster. I think we have a better chance at major tournaments by building a team rather than hoofing it up to "our stars" and praying they do something special, which they cannot do in the big games, ala WC 2010.

Chile, Uruguay, Germany and Ghana all proved that team work pays off.

Now Peter Crouch's cheated on his missus? What the hell is wrong with them?

I imagine even ten-minutes of conversation with that vacuous woman is enough to make you suicidal...

Mind you he's probably not with Abbey Clancy for the riveting conversation, so it does beg the question why cheat.
Maybe she orgasms in a scouse accent, I imagine that'd get old quickly!! :D

Don't be daft, we should have played all the fringe players that everyone was calling for in the first game!!

Not the team that got us there in our best qualification ever!

Drop Ronney as well, he's ****.

I agree, Walcott should have gone to the WC he was immense all season.

Milner should be bloodied in as well, can't remember the last time he played for England.

Micah Richards as well, legend of a player had a storming season.

Foster, yeah definetely, he's another one that is absolutely steady as a rock, hence why he is at Birmingham and not a top 4 side.

Johnson, Witshire and Cahill I agree with, that may be why they are in this squad!

Ronney is crap for England, same for Gerrard and Lampard.

--------------Hart-----------------

Johnson Jagielka Terry Cole

------Cattermole--- Barry-----

Milner--------------------------Johnson

------Defoe----Agbonlahor-----

That would be my team for the qualifiers.

Right OK so Rooney was crap but Johnson, Terry, Milner, Defoe and Barry all had stormers did they?

It's obvious you don't have a clue what you're on about so would you be so kind as to not discuss this with me :)

How can any of these players play as badly as the WC squad?

You seem to have missed the fact that England were dire. May as well play a whole new team and start again with a youthful side.
