New Mac Mini

Who would buy the top spec Mini when it is only £40 cheaper than the base level iMac at £969, but that is FASTER at 3.06Ghz, and comes with a 21.5" 1920x1200 res screen for an extra £40 !

Yes, the mini has a better gfx (i think), but if you are not into games or rendering work (who gets a mini or base level iMac for those anyway?), then it would be insane to get a mini.

Or am I talking rubbish?

They've got over-excited with their pricing again.

Which in turn has dampened my excitement and willingness to purchase.

They will eventually learn.

Only £580 in Australia...

If the base unit had 4Gb of ram, I would have replaced my 2.53/4Gb mini in a heartbeat.

Still tempted though... something about having no powerbrick and only needing a HDMI cable to hook it into my home entertainment system that is ever so tempting

Don't forget most JB, Dick Smith and David Jones will also negotiate 10% discount on most Apple hardware if pushed.

Also considering upgrading my 2.52/4GB 2009 Mac Mini, but as I haven't really got into Steam since installing it, I think I may just stick with my current model. Must resist!....

Apple are going to bankrupt me if I'm not careful.

MUCH cheaper to buy PC Components and run H'tosh. Apple's pricing is now gone over the line. £650 for that piece of crap? Old hat processor, 4GB ram...crappy ram. A decent design yes but it's not worth £650. That is insane. Apple are crazy and anyone who spends money on that is just stupid.

Pricing is way off, as Raymond said, it's only £40-100 or so more to get an iMac which has better specs and a f-in 21.5inch decent screen. Where is the sense in the pricing? This thing should be valued at £350.

H'Tosh all the way and so should everyone else.

Genuinely interested..... What PC case would be a good shout then and is comparable to the Mac Mini?

Yes, people who aren't obsessed with specs and just want a small, nice looking computer are stupid because they spent £650 rather than wasting a day of their life speccing and building a hacintosh.

You might not like but, and this might be news to you, people with a different opinion or set of priorities to you are not automatically stupid.

They have seen that people have been buying the Mac Mini as a media centre, then tried to add in some functionality that was missing (HDMI) and charged more.

It's a good little machine, but it needs to be at least £150 less or come with an i3/i5.

Well, if you compare to the more specialist media center machines companies are turning out I think it actually compares well...

is a silent (which the mini comes close to) machine you could stick under the TV without it looking like you've just stuck a desktop there and it's of very similar spec.

It costs €1200!

If they are targeting the media center style machine (seeing as it's the first Mac ever to have HDMI I believe I'd say they at least partly are) then I think it's doing all right value wise. It's not good if you compare it to a £200 ION net top but then it's not a competitor to that in Apple's mind...

I bought a mini as a media centre, and while I see where you're coming from, my point was they originally marketed the machine as a switchers machine, but now they've seen how people are buying them for media centres and whacked on HDMI and a price increase :(

One thing I've seen mentioned elsewhere is that this new Mac Mini only has 5400RPM drives (both capacities), but the Mac Mini Server has two 7200RPM drives.

Just waiting for a teardown/disassembly guide on it for a) How easy the HDD is to change, and B) Whether the ODD is still 12.7mm or if they've changed it to super-slim 9.5mm.

We ordered a Mini for the office last week and they've sent us a new one, sweet! Loving the size of it, very impressive design I must say. Don't think we paid the inflated cost for it over the original design we paid for either.

Pics are obligatory.

Why of course...

The bottom access panel just twists open, no tools needed, and you have access to clean the cooling fan too. Very neat and tidy.

Photos were iPhowned ;)

Ha, just go with it, Apple have bankrupted me nicely, but look I have an awesome iPad, iMac and Mac mini to play with... :D

Hmmmm, might wait a month and see how well the psu in the case works.

The new mini's looks are amazing, however I can't justify the price for the spec. Personally as a second system I think the base spec is ok, would probably go for the 4 GB of ram though. The price is just unrealistic when you compare it to a custom build mini itx.

Don’t get me wrong I expect an Apple premium on top but like others have said you might as well just get an iMac.

The 2009 mini is good enough for a multi-media system. I bought the 2.66GHz C2D, 4GB, 9400M model in feb - it sits under the TV and acts as my media station, development server, steam games console (TF2!) and crunches ClimatePrediction.net 24/7.

If you have a iMac then adding £200 AppleTV may be the way to go but as the AppleTV does not have the oomph to cope with 1080p and lacks 1080p content (iTunes) or a blu-ray drive then an AppleTV really is a non-starter.

Looks like the iPhone/iPad have cannibalised the lower end of the mac/pc market where those people don't want much but a browsing/email/light personal game device.
