New Man Utd Manager Search

So looks like Ten Hag has been officially interviewed. He does seem to be the main candidate by all the noise coming out in the last few weeks.

I seriously hope that is true. We have tried so many big names and even an ex legend. The work he has done at Ajax is fantastic. He just needs the right structure around him.

It would have been interesting to have seen how that Ajax team would have fared against Liverpool in that 19 final as spurs were so jammy to beat them on away goals.

I saw he's been interviewed. I really hope it's Ten Hag - with a lot of new staff too.

There is no absolute stand out manager to challenge Pep and Klopp (maybe Tuchel), and Ten Hag looks like someone who could potentially reach that sort of level. That's we need, assuming he's given the right support from the board etc.

Poch feels a very predictable choice and the fans don't seem to want him.

What are you basing this on? The league he manages in isn’t even on par with the championship. Agree about Poch though would be a predictable and frankly boring appointment for United.

Not sure its quite that bad but I think its the fact that he is doing the business in Europe as well which is all the harder when your domestic league isn't the strongest.

United are just in a complete mess and I don't know how any manager can fix it. There are too many core issues that need to be addressed over years and could make any managers job borderline impossible.

Our wage structure is the elephant in the room. Too many players that are not good enough on wages that suggest they are not only good enough but absolutely world class. You can't bring in top players and tell them "we aren't paying you what player X is on because we are trying to build a better wage structure". They don't give a **** about that. All they will see is Mata or Rashford or Maguire earning more than them and being ****.

The upside is that quite a lot of players will probably leave at the end of the season which will remove some of the headaches. Pogba, Lingard, Ronaldo, Cavani, Mata, Matic, Martial. The next manager will still have to sort out the defence but I think that we have "good enough" players for now if our aspirations are simply to consolidate and fix for a season. With a couple of midfield additions and a good striker we should be fine for top 4 next season. I would suggest that ETH will be better and getting the most from existing players and less pricey additions as well.

Still got a somewhat nagging suspicion that Poch will be here in the summer and that the owners basically just want to keep the circus moving. Its worked for them for nearly 15 years so why shake it up. Our fans are idiots and unwilling to do anything long term that would force the Glazers out so we kind of have what we deserve.

I fully expect us to do it all half-cocked and bring him in, but continue to meddle and not let him do things his way, ultimately causing him to be no different to anyone else.

My only real reservation about Ten Hag is the lack of Premier League experience.

Seems that the latest twitter rumours are that the man utd board will want an ex player to be the next managers assistant - seems stupid enough to be real

What’s he done in the CL since then?

Rebuild. He lost what 4-5 first team players. Yes the recent last 16 game was a bit of an anomaly but cup games can give you that. Ajax had 70% possession and 16 shots on goal in that game they lost to Benfica. He had a 100% clean sweep in their group with Dortmund and Sporting (Who are current Portuguese champions). Scoring 20 goals and conceding 5 which was the second biggest GD in the group's behind only Bayern.

This is with what you would call a championship team. He has taken players who were bang average in the Premier League and turned them into good players. A lot of the "stars" that left that Ajax team at the end of the 19 season have also not fared as well which would lead me to believe his management is a big influence in their performance as well.

I said the league isn’t on par with the championship not necessarily Ajax. He’s be a better choice then Poch simply because Poch would be a full appointment but he hasn’t done anything of note in his managerial career.

16 shots at goal yes....2 on target mind you.

This. I'll predict it right now, if Ten Hag comes in, in 12 months time the very people saying its good right now will be saying that Ten Hag must go.

I very much doubt that. Most of the sensible fans can see if a manager is working towards something and improving. This is the thing, United still haven't appointed a manager who has hinted at being even a moderate success long term. Moyes was wrong time, wrong place and wrong guy. LvG was someone who could have perhaps gone somewhere slowly but again, the club was still working on Ferguson like expectations and he wasn't moving quickly enough or delivering an exciting style of football. Mourinho did pretty well all things considered but ultimately he is a 2 season manager these days and his race is run. He was world class when players didn't think the earth revolved around them but these days he can't manage egos. The less said about Ole the better. Awful appointment and anyone with half a brain could see that he was doing nothing for the team that would result in future success of any magnitude.

If United can get a manager who starts to build something, fix some of the issues in the team and give us an identity, the fans will support them. The worst part of being a United fan the past decade has been the manner of our **** show. Its watching us repeatedly make the same mistakes. Not fixing any of the issues and always going down the same blind alleys.

We haven't tried a manager who is capable of building a team on a smaller budget and who creates teams that are greater than the sum of their parts. Thats what all the top teams have. A manager who adds to the collection of players and elevates them. Ole got about 60% out of his players most of the time. I'm not talking results or goals, I'm talking performances. I'm sick of winning games where we play like garbage. I want to lose more games where we play well. Thats when you know you are probably on the right path.

Win games because you are the better side and lose games when you are the better side i.e. Liverpool

vs.

Win games because you have better players and enough quality that you will create a few good moments and lose games when you are utter garbage. i.e United

Against Spurs the other week Ronaldo got a hat-trick from 0.85 xG. Thats a pretty good metaphor for United over the past few years until the recent implosion.
