New Metal Gear Solid 4 Footage

Im incredibly disappointed by that.

I'll start with the good, the engine looks very good, some lovely animations. Glad you can play the game in over the shoulder and fps as well if you choose. The interface looks very smooth as well

But what the hell is that camo system? am i supposed to believe a soldier would not see a man lying on a flat floor?!?! that just looked shocking, the drum barrel bit looked completely unbelievable as did the statue. Some of the animations looked very dodgy (the guys he shot on the rooftop who seemed to die, then realise they were in a big screen blockbuster and lept over the edge), the A.I seemed extremely suspect, not hearing snake drop down from the floor above when he was walking by. Also there were a couple of points in the video where the soldiers would almost certainly have seen him but didn't.

I dont know, im hoping its early code (whens this due out?) but that left me feeling very underwhelmed :(

That's MGS for you. Don't expect realism (if I have to play another Splinter Cell i'll die of boredom), this is over the top anime influenced stealth/action. So, he's got a special suit that blends into his surroundings - it's a video game, who really cares? As long as it adds to the gameplay (which I think it will) it'll be a worthy inclusion. The barrel may look a little silly and the falling animtaion was over the top, but that's the intention. We're well into the realms of cartoon here. Not to everyone's taste, but what is?

I'm looking forward to sneaking about, taking foes down one by one, hearing a few footsteps and quickly pressing up against the wall and vanishing seconds before a patrol spots me. Will they see me, did I make too much noise? Invariably, the closer to realism a video game gets the more dull it is. It'd be easy to poke 100's of holes in games like thief (oh, why's this stone floor suddenly covered in moss?), but we don't because they're fun. MGS4 looks like great fun :)

Oh, difficulty levels will be tweaked. Have some faith.

but the fact is there trying to make it realistic, other wise why would they have gone for realistic 'grey-pallette' graphics? it just seems like they cant decide what they want to do, bits seem realistic, then other bits seems completely stupid. And its not that the camo suit lets you blend in its the fact that soldiers dont see you even if your lying on a 2d floor, or next to a 2d wall!!! thats just stupid and takes you right out of the experience. After seeing the camo shown in the call of duty trailer (with the guy lying in the long grass) this just looks silly in comparison, like the person who made it didn't really 'get' the idea of camoflauge. Now i hope im wrong and this is all ealry code and easy a.i. as other people have said, and i am still looking forward to this but imo this video is pretty poor.

I understand where you are coming from, But Anime these days is aiming for realism. Take Final Fantasy Advent Children, Thats got the same Grey Pallette, and thats a CGI movie! Yet the movie is still extreme Anime at heart.

I think what's happened with MGS, is that. It's still anime at its base. But it's been built to stun people, and look great. People dont want to play a stealth action game with cell shading like Zelda, People need realism. But as said, The undertone of the game will always be anime like, and i like that.

That said, I agree with the laying on the floor and disapearing completely from an enemies view problem, I found that very hard to ignore. But all in all thats the only problem i saw with the video, And i'm praying to GOD it's dumbed down AI and a maxed out camo index lol.

Never played a MGS game for more than 10mins, and I can't see this one changing my opinion on them :-/

Nice idea with the suit, goggles etc but tbh it just doesn't float my boat.

In saying that it does look very very nice, probably the best looking game I've seen in a long time :)

They're not. Adding a few elements of realism, sure, like in the other mgs games.

You mention the CoD trailer (with the guy hiding in the grass?), which to me looks very dull. I remember trying to slog through games like Flashpoint and almost slitting my wrists. If stealth = staying still for ages and waiting for the (9/10 easily exploitable ai) to walk by, then count me out.

mgs has always been like this - exclamation points popping above guards heads when the see you, carboard boxes that seemingly move aroud on their own :) I mean come on, imagine James Bond climbing in a cardboard box and slowly following a guard around. It'd be laughed out of the cinema. Worked great in MGS, though.

Maybe try suspending your disbelief. His suit is so good you can't see it even on a flat surface (it reminds of those school adverts withthe guy popping out of the notice board)

That looked amazing! Personally I can't wait for MGS4 and I'm glad I have a PS3 so I can play it.

They have just expanded on the things you could do in the previous games, using the environment and your equipment to evade the enemy. There's always been silly features in the Metal Gear Solid series, like the exclamation marks above enemies' heads or the porn mags.

Hiding in a box is one thing, hiding in a barrel is another thing.

Those features you stated aren't particularly silly

when has MGS "ever" been like splinter cell ?

I didn't say it was like splinter cell, i said that they're trying to do things differently to splinter cell since splinter cell has practically already done everything already, hence why we have such crap ideas in the new MGS to try and make it different

andy said:
sure splinter cell copied loads of the game play but theyre still completley different and always have been afaic

tbh, the only thing splinter cell actually copied was the stealth elements. Using your environment to your advantage (hiding in shadows and shiz) was all splinter cell. MGS just started it all

that camo thing might seem silly but MGS has never been about realism has it , that feature will add something to the game , gives it something extra over just been a generic stealth em up

Makes the game easy mode tbh, doesn't look particularly fun either

I think it looks great, graphics looks amazing, really looking forward to this although I cant believe that it took them this LONG to put crouch run/walk or even simply walking while in FPS view!!!

I do think the Otocamo is a bit of a gimick (although it does look cool) as in MGS3 i only used about 3 suits for the whole game but hopefully they will make it so you have to use it as there isnt much cover and with PMC groups walking round it looks like you may use it a lot more then you may think.

But aside from all the little bits i dislike i still think it will be one hell of a game. Cant Wait...

I assume all the people in here who don't think it is anything special are now quite relived ([edit] i think relived is the wrong word here) it isn't going onto the 360?

I can't help but think if this had been E3 and Peter Moore pull Kojima on stage to show this off as a major coup for MS everybody would think it looks gorgeous. As it is a PS3 exclusive, and this is ocuk, many folks on here, who don't have a PS3 and have expressed little/no intension of getting one are now saying it doesn't look good.

Makes me laugh tbh.

The trailer only serves to make me wish that a 360 version is in the works more than ever - but hey, I'm not to fussed, I already have a PS3 and game on preorder :) Anyone who says the game looks average is crazy. Some of the things shown in the trailer is perhaps inconsistent and ridiculous (bottomless pockets, magic barrels) but you have to remember that gameplay takes precendence over realism, and this game looks like it will have buckets of both anyway.

Don't forget Heavenly Sword demo this Thursday. That looks like a game that can bitch slap God of War and get away with it.

Hands on reports varied from 'it's ok' to 'pretty good'. I hope it's awesome, but am not getting my hopes up for a God of War killer. Now, Devil May Cry 4, Ninja Gaiden 2, God of War 3 (it's bound to happen) - they gives me a semi :)

The real big one will be what the ico team bring next.

I thought it looked pretty impressive. Looked like loads of new weapons, I just hope there is some none stealth bits where you could go into FPS mode for a bit and just kill some bad guys!

Anyone fancy lending me login details of a jap account so I can download the one on Playstation Store (I can't be bothered to go though the lengthy sign up process).

I might watch it later after I WATCH HEROES ON BBC2 TONIGHT AT 9PM.
