New Motherboard, CPU & Memory.

Hi,

It now looks like I'm going for some new components, as trying to source a new 1155 motherboard isn't looking promising and could take a while.

I'm out of touch with motherboard socket numbers, but I gather that I have a choice out of 1550, 1551 or 2011? I'm not sure what the ideal path is from here.

In terms of budget, I would like to try and stay within 'good performance / value for money' range, so yes, the less it costs me the better. However, I don't wish to take a backward step and end up with something slower than what I had before either. I have had a brief look at the AMD CPUs, though as far as I know the 9590 is slower than the 3570K?

My current system / parts I will be replacing:

Z77-D3H
i5 3570K
8GB dual channel 1600mhz ram.

I should have added that I use my system for gaming (1440p), video editing, films, YouTube, Poker, etc.

If someone could check out this thread and ease my mind, I would be grateful: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18750472

Ignore AMD, they have nothing to compete against Intel.

To get an equivalent system now you have this,

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £374.07
(includes shipping: £11.10)

You can reuse the cooler you have (need new thermal paste).

But for your stated uses then an i7 would be better.

Unless you want more than 4 cores and want 2x 16 lane PCIe for SLI, you want socket 1551 and a skylake i7 as Stu suggested.

You can also get an ultra fast NVMe SSD to go with it.

Personally I'd look for a board with intel ethernet though.

Thanks, Stulid.

Although I would like an i7, I might have to forgo it this time unless it's not too much more. Will it make that much difference to rendering times?

What CPU thermal paste would you recommend?

Is it worth increasing the memory to 16GB?

The chip that controls the ethernet port, that board has a 3rd party one, people prefer intel controlled ones, Ive not had any drama with either.

Stuff just works.

Yeah I'm a bit of network snob as I work in the industry. (Not for intel). :D

Asus over MSI.

ASUS tend to use Intel LAN also.

Thermal Grizzly is the paste to have at the moment.

If you already have a cooler (but saying that the retail K skylake cpus dont include one either) and dont mind 1 year VS 3 year warranty.

Thanks. Not sure whether to go for the 6700K retail or not now.

So, would you rate an Asus mobo over the Gigabyte one you included (in that bundle)?

This Asus board looks a little cheaper:

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a sponge for information - and don't know as much as most on here, it seems. :)

Its cheaper and uses DDR3, the Gigabyte one is SLI/Crossfire 8X/8X, that ASUS is Crossfire only 16X/4X

3 vs 4 year warranty, the gigabyte bound to have better onboard sound etc.

Ok, I think I'm sort of getting there now.

Would the memory, for example, in the bundle Stulid linked clash with my CPU cooler (Noctua DH-15)?

Probably, ................wait the DH-15 has cut out bits doesnt it for tall ram.

Off the top of my head, I don't know for sure. Having said that, I do have some bent fins on it which could probably be straightened out (I assume), but regardless, I am now also looking at a new cooler. The Raijintek ones are really catching my eye in TTL's comparison:

The RAM i think is 53mm tall, the NH-D15 says 60mm in single fan or 30mm with both fans.

I was just looking into that as well. Sounds pretty close.

I've loved the cooler from day one (temps are amazing), but over time I've started to desire something more compact - and a little less fiddly.
