New Motherboard, CPU & Memory.

Would it be worth considering 1150/Z97 & staying with DDR3?

Edit: scrap that, the 4790K is around the same price as the 6700K, so I may as well stick with 1151/DDR4.

Maybe, but then if you look at some of the new prices they aint that great either and maybe Z170+DDR4 isnt all that much more.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £457.68
(includes shipping: £8.70)

There is a cheap £69 Gigabyte Z97 board instock.

On the motherboard specification description, it says 'support for 2133 memory'. Does that mean it doesn't allow a higher frequency like 2400, or beyond?

Anything over the base 2133 is an overclock, so you can buy memory capable of higher speeds but it might not be able to run that fast. From what I have read 2666 is normally OK but 3000 and above is luck of the draw. 3000mhz is a good balance between speed and cost if you can afford it, and fingers crossed it will be stable at that. Otherwise I would just go for 2400mhz (this is normally cheapest), and you should be fine running at that speed. There are a couple of FPS in some games when going higher but its up to you whether or not its really worth the extra £ :)

Thanks, Daaaveee. I might just go with the cheapest but decent 2133 ram that will be compatible with the DH-15.

In fact, I can remember Linus doing a video on ram frequencies & fps differences in games, and even slower memory than what we are talking about here made very, very little difference. I guess what's more important is the amount of memory, rather than the speed.

Not a lot of 2133 about to be honest, this would be the cheapest 16GB and low profile too:

This is probably worth the extra few quid for 3000mhz but not low profile:

Sorry, this little thing called work getting in the way :o Looks fine, I would have gone with 16GB of ram to be honest but nevermind :)

I'm not too hot on CAS latency but I think DDR3 and DDR4 can't be compared on that front really, and any differences in DDR4 will be so minor you may as well just pick the cheapest?

Enjoy anyway!

I was tempted but since this isn't a planned 'upgrade', I decided to keep the cost as low as possible. Hopefully, I'll get it delivered by Tuesday. :)

It's a real shame that I've got to say goodbye to the 3570K, it's the best CPU I've ever had by far. Looked to be a healthy pick with regards to the silicon lottery, too.

I'm dismantling my old system in readiness for the new one, but have just noticed that for some reason a few of the fins on my cpu cooler are bent. Will that seriously affect its ability to keep the cpu cool? I'm trying to straighten the wonky fins out, but I doubt I can set them back perfectly.
