New OcUK Website

the amount of hits that the new one just recieved im guessing more bandwidth will be needed since its php. not sure if it was bought to a halt due to customers accessing it / people from this forum or what but didn't look too good. I like the layout of the new one but its very common. :D

It's probably useful having the SQL code as stored procedures, and then just call the procedures from the code.

I don't know how efficient PHP is at runtime. I know .net compiles the first time you load the page.

You can include php in HTML pages. You get the best of both worlds this way.
You cannot include PHP in HTML pages. You might be able to mod_rewrite PHP pages to appear to have .html file extensions, but otherwise the only way to go is including HTML in PHP pages. Aside from the ordering process, which I haven't experienced, the entire previous site was static HTML files, compiled offline using the Actinic software. That's my understanding of the process, anyway.

Besides, PHP isn't all that cool anyway. Everyone knows the Ruby on Rails and Django frameworks are the way forward ;)

Hi there

For those who are disliking the new site don't be so quick to judge.

Yes at first glance it may look similar to some other E-Tailors as the new site is a mix of all the best points/parts of our old website and other e-tailors.

However those complaining about navigation of the new site should step back and have another look before making that comment. Have a play with the search and filter facilities as they are incredibly easy to use.

Let me put an example together. If you ordering a few bits on the old site, say an upgrade consisting of mainboard, CPU, RAM, PSU, VGA and cooler etc. you have to do several clicks and lots of scrolling on each section. Add item to basket which is very slow and then press back several times. Then repeat the process for the amount of items you want to order. Then have to enter all your details. In total to do a system upgrade or buy the parts for a system it can take 20-40mins on the old site.

However with the new site this can easily be accomplished in sub 5 minutes once you have an account setup. :) Thats a much more pleasurable buying experience in my view.

If you do look around the current site you will find we have kept the layout as similar to the old site as possible but with a few tweaks here and there. For instance graphics cards are identical to how they were before but all accessible with ONE CLICK and you don't need to be pressing back loads of times etc. etc.
Then the products when you click on a section are still ordered in the same manner, so you scroll down and its in alphabetical order and obviously when it comes to HDD's by size.
Plus if you click at the top of the pricing or manufacturer the site will arrange/sort for you as you can customize the new site to suite you best.

Also when searching for products it works and is very fast unlike competitors. The filter option is fantastic, so easy to use and un-cluttered unlike other sites and as soon as you filter you get the products instantly within your filtering guidelines.

Also the new site has realtime stock levels, anything under 10 products it says the exact amount in stock and anything over 10, wether it be 11, 100 or 1000 it says 10+.

Also now when ordering you can choose a delivery day and if your ordering something out of stock the checkout will give you the option to split the order and backorder that product.

The new site has been designed to make the customers shopping experience easier and faster. Yes some of you may miss the old look but don't be so quick to **** it off, setup an account, experiment with the site and get to grips with it and I am sure you will soon see that the positive points far outweigh the negatives.

We launched the site tonight as most people are out drinking a few pints and hence its a quiet safe period to do so. Unfortunately it did not take long for you lot to break it;) but as always with something new there is gonna be teething problems which are now been sorted. The new site will be alive and kicking again soon and by tomorrow I am sure it will be operating flawlessy.

Also remember this is just the beginning and we have many plans to further improve this website and will be reading feedback and making adjustments. However we'd like to think once its up and running stable that even though the new site may look like most the other E-Tailors it is indeed a damn site better and easier to use and that will only improve as time goes by.

Bear with us folks and don't to quick to judge the new site. :)

Thanks

Gibbo
