New PS3 firmware to remove Other OS feature

At the end of the day, they're removing a feature that was paid for on purchase of the console.

PS3 owners paid for an agreement with the console that included the possibility of removal of features.

It's called a EULA, but nobody reads the damn things.

I dont care about this, i never used it and thought it was a complete waste
they are getting rid to protect themselves better that then them finding other wyas
to counter the money lost via Piracy...maybe Paid PSN? Charge more for games?

So if they add features, should they get to charge us more?

I can see why people are against this as a principle, but when all said and done it's a seldom-used feature which wasn't particularly good or useful in the first place. If Sony are removing it to protect the console from privacy, then good. If they're getting rid of it just for the sake of it, then...well, I don't really mind either. It'll be one less item cluttering up the Settings menu.

This is a good point that people are overlooking. If this measure wasn't taken, the losses Sony would have taken from the inaction would have to be made up elsewhere.

So does this mean the 10gig or so I have allocated to my Yellow Dog install I will get back as normal after the update and the feature has been removed?

Personally, I'd just delete it myself prior to updating, but I would hope the update is at least sensible enough to delete the partition and get the space back before the option is totally removed.

It's not as simple as just deleting the partition - the current process requires you to format the PS3 hard disc entirely to recover (or setup) Other OS partitions. Most likely if you have an Other OS partition it will just sit dormant until the disk is formatted. Great.

Don't be silly. :) If they want to add features that's up to them; I was quite happy with the feature set of the console I bought in 2007, hence why I bought it. I'm disappointed they feel their only option is to remove this, the openness of the platform compared with other consoles was one of the reasons I opted to go for a PS3. What will they remove next in the name of security? :)

I've only just found out about this and frankly i'm ****** I love my Original 60GB PS3 because I prefer the shape, Can use my old PS2 games on it and I enjoy tinkering around with Ubuntu. and now there just gonna take Linux away from me, What have i done wrong? I bought my console with this feature in mind, I haven't "upgraded" to a Slim PS3 because it lacks this feature, I keep my fingers crossed that my 60Gb PS3 doesn't YLOD because I won't be able to buy a new PS3 with OTHEROS and BC. And now they're just gonna turn it off. Surely this can't be right?

If i bought a Sony Bravo and the BBC anounced they were gonna show a program on Sony's poor business practices would it be acceptable for Sony to block BBC channels on there TV's?

Just because allot of people don't use otheros doesn't make it acceptable. It was a an advertised feature that some of us actually use :(

Yes, if you agreed to a license when you started using the TV that said they could do that.

I know a few people that use Linux on PS3 just to rip Blu-Rays.

Don't really care tbh, my netbook can run Linux faster than the PS3 does. :|

Uuumm.....im wondering now how much my 60gb PS3 would be worth on the bay in a few months if i dont upgrade the firmware.

Don't Update

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won't. It'll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn't lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn't about getting what you didn't pay for, it's about making sure you do get what you did.

And this is about more than this feature right now. It's about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it's the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.

Trading Standards anybody? - Item no longer does what it was orginally bought/ intended for with recent proposed f/w upgrade, and if you don't upgrade again your system has lost vital parts of it's purpose, i.e internet and ability to even play games

Not trying to be awkward, but where exactly was it advertised? To my knowledge, it was never used as a major (or minor) selling point by Sony.

I also don't think that there's any Trading Standards case possible here; it's a games console/media device, they haven't really affected any of its core functionality. The counter-argument will no-doubt be that, if you want a fully-functional computer, you should go and buy one.
