New road bike advice

Shimano stopped making triples above tiagra when they went 11 speed. Sram have never made one. You can get a campag Athena triple.

Triples are popular on the continent where they have mountains. They're not popular here because they are uncool, and us brits are obsessed with how our stuff looks, often at the expense of function.

I have a Dawes Audax with a tiagra triple, I don't use it much, but I always consider it for very hilly days

I've spoken with a few people who have found even with large cassette, on their double the gearing isn't low enough.

I myself am fine on a double, and on my triple I never use the granny ring, but can see why some need a triple.

Do you have one? Have you ever run one? I run dura ace 1700 Di2, only available in short cage and it runs fine, whether you recommend it or not. I've checked it out, too and it doesn't put it under too much stress, unless you have it on 32 and on the big ring.

I have to leave this thread, you bring out the worst in me.

LOL whatever. With short cage mech I wouldn't go above 28T. With 32 definietly want medium cage to be safe.

A? 32 and short cage is no issue

With you there, this is one weird conversation.

He is stating what shimano say to be fair.

Shimano say loads of things don't work but they will work fine.

Newer short cases can take up to 30 with the longer cage being recommended for the 32.

You end up exceeding the total capacity of the rear mechs ability to take up chain slack with a compact and an 11-32. You shouldn't ride small with smallest anyway.

I run 28 and 32 cassettes for different rides depending on the hills.

32 does not work with a short cage RD - I have to swap the RD [Shimano 105 5800]
