New Site Feedback

Disagree as we are the 'UK'

Wouldn't matter if we were the kings of the world, consideration for others should always come first or we are no better than animals.

Bow to other standards? Its the INTERNATIONAL date standard, its not bowing, no country owns or uses that standard nationally from heritage. It was made up to stop confusion.

Its not like a particular country made it up and now we all bow to it, it was a considerate joint collaboration to accommodate ALL people, instead of being selfish and only considering one set of people.

Personally I would change all dates to this, because when sorting files in this method they actually sort in the right order :D instead of having all files that are from the 1st of the month first. Just saying.

The reason is because DD/MM/YYYY can be confused with MM/DD/YYYY where the day factor is less than 13, however YYYY-MM-DD cannot be confused with anything as YYYY-DD-MM does not exist and anyone that used that would be ignored for being stupid.

Still the website is staying the same even with a massive % of people disliking it? Are the views expressed here worth it?

Actually stuff is changed every single day, but a lot you wont notice. Bugs, template tweaks, additions.

However that does not mean we are ignoring people, but style changes at the moment are lower down than making sure everything works for the user.

As long as you have a search bar and categories, any most web users will find what they want.

I mentioned before, but technically we have 3x the number of categories as before, with a most of them auto generating. Allowing far greater break down of product selection, generally without the problems we used to have of products appearing in 1 category and not another.

The old site was all manually put in categories, and people make mistakes, forget stuff and miss stuff off, now purchasers have a far simpler task.

Despite the front page being busy, most people don't care about this because most people just want to look at the latest monitor/gfx card/ see what sales we have on etc, the front page is 1 page out of thousands.

You now can reach 3 layers down in to the website with 1 click from any page, previously this was not possible.

Yes there are improvements to be made, but technically the functionality of the site and the ability to find what you want should have increased.

Hence the greater site usage and purchases.

Slowness and that annoying pop up are the reasons I don't spec builds in GH anymore, it's infuriating waiting 10 seconds each time for the basket to load and then remove an item... One by one... Slowly.... It's unfortunate.

Also the categories need work, you can't filter on some basics like HDD sizes and RAM types, or I'm missing something?

To take items out of your basket you don't need to wait normally for the page to reload just click each one with a slight pause between clicks and the wait for the reload.

There is also an empty basket button to completely empty.

Slow search is bad, can you tell me what you are looking for I just did a quick test right now and the search was fairly responsive. We are using the exact same search engine as before so it should be the same as the old site, its a third party search engine.

I could possibly add the ability to set in your account not to show the popups and just add it and take you to the basket. Or would the preferred method be to have it act how it does but not show the pop up, just adjust the basket count and highlight? Not promising this just asking.

You can break down ram types and hdd sizes by category, you could never do it with a filter, but that is something we want to add however to do so we need to add attributes to all products which as you can probably guess is a lot of work.

Oh yay, more fail programming. Site ignores browser string and loads mobile site regardless, suppose at least it seems to remember which site you select after that.

And is still awful anyway, still have to scroll down passed all the tabs and adverts to actually see any products.

? Do you mean it ignores the address? If so ... yes.... thats deliberate so if you go on any link you get the best view for your device. There is not mobile and desktop links, you just switch to desktop if for some reason you don't like mobile view or w/e.

Scroll passed what tabs? If you are looking for a product, look for a product. A sites front page is used for advertising stuff as you have not actually gone anywhere yet to look at products, what do you want, all the products on the website in a massive list on the homepage?

Lets take for example Amazons site

KLmP74C.png

Its adverts, after all, all that really matters is the search bar.

Infact, find me a site that displays products only on the frontpage of their mobile site.

Our site actually gives direct links to to the today only, the only product you should really need to know about on the front page aswell as to the this week only deals.

The rest of the categories are got to via the categories button or searching.

If you don't know by now that this m2tThiY.png is the categories button, I am unsure what mobile sites you have visited before. The 3 lines is standard to indicate categories.

For example:

If you want I will do what AO did and write MENU underneath.

Once you are actually in a category only thing that isthere is the products and the top nav

I mean, webwrosers send out a string of data(user agent string, is it's proper name), which tells you what the browser is etc, this is how it detects it's a mobile version of a browser. However in webrowsers you can select choose desktop sites, within settings. This then attaches a piece of info to that string. Now it's very simple to program the site to look for this extra part to the string and thus show the correct web site. So in my case it should show desktop version. If it wasn't for the lazy and poor programming skills of the developer.

And yes your mobile site is very poor, it's just all the others are very poor as well. Hence so many of us change the setting in the webrowser to request the desktop version. Not that your desktop version is any much better, with all the wasted space, repeated menus taking up real estate, massive adverts and general poor design.
What browser are you using, I understand the user agent is being read to determine if it should supply the mobile or desktop version, thats correct, from your description you are using a desktop browser that's being detected as a mobile or tablet, so what browser.

The search function is terrible; possibly the worst I've seen on a website in the past five years. Most sites let you enter a query such as "32GB DDR4", and then filter down into category, then sub-category, and apply filters such as ECC/Registered, Unbuffered, SODIMM etc. With the new site, the best you can do is filter down to "PC Components", and then you have scroll through motherboards, processors and bundles as well as memory modules. Searching for "32GB SODIMM" is even worse - the only result in "PC Components" is 32GB of desktop memory!

we have been using the same search provider for about 3 years, that didn't change.

From chrome on android with request desktop setting selected, showed bottom of page to show that it does not think I am mobile. This is why I want the browser and if possible version and os.
