Hello chaps,

I think my OCZ vertex 2 has died,It suddenly dissapeared from the Raid array and says "Failed",It also doesnt show on its own in another machine..so going to RMA.

In the case they wont replace it though,Id be looking to get a replacement.
Ive not been keeping up with the latest SSD releases so which controller should i be looking at?..they all have diffrent ones. :p

  • Phison controller
  • SandForce SF-2281
  • Marvell
  • LAMD SSD controller
  • Indilinx Controller

Also i noticed some have "Buffer" and some dont,Does this really improve performance/reliability?

samsungs own tri arm controller

marvell arnt bad either

not sure on the buffer I doubt it does much unlike on mechanical drives

I wouldn't bother with choosing SSD based on controller alone these days.

if you're after maximum reliability, go Intel. otherwise Samsung 840 Evo/ Pro.

whatever replacement OCZ offers you, just sell it.

I used to own 120GB V2 back in the days for a while , but sold it before it had a chance to fail.

Generally Intel regarded as the most solid drives, had a few myself with zero issues.

Samsung generally hold the must buy crown in overall performance, reliability and cost.

Currently running a Intel 300GB 320, Samsung 830 256GB, 2x Samsung 840 250GB.

Looking at all the SSD,s on here,The Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO looks the best in performance and has 512mb cache buffer (Although not sure what this does) for the price.

250GB is plenty for me,Shame they're out of stock.

The buffer is something you can ignore with the EVO range.

It isn't used to store data, but IIRC, lookup tables (so when the OS requests data in sector 1230987, it knows where that sectors is on the flash chips).

Flat lookup table or something.

Bottom line is... ignore the cache!

In the "early days", Intel SSDs were regarded as being the most reliable.

Are there any figures to show if this is still the case ?

Well i just decided to go for the Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO,From what i hear its a VERY fast drive.

One of those alone is much faster than my OCZ Vertex 2s in Raid 0 plus its 250GB so..

Thanks anyway chaps. :)

Well Intel now aims at the workstation/server segments, so it is still the case :p

Generally however, from my casual browsing, Intel/Samsung get the least complains.
