NEW STEAM DEALS!!!!

daft question - I know you can have multiple copies of steam on different PCs

but do you have to be connected to the internet ie your online account for the game to run ?

have just gifted Medieval 2 for my dad - and he may play it on 2 PCs, a desktop PC, and a laptop when he is away (obviously not at same time) - and wondered how it worked.

when he'll be on the laptop he'll not be online as he'll be in a Caravan in some remote location

also - if you download and install on one machine, can you do the "backup to a local drive" - so you don't have to download it twice ? (hes on 2MB connection)

thanks, Buckster

You can download it to one machine, copy the folder to another, connect to the Internet to check files are all OK and launch game. Once you've launched it once, you can just go in to "Offline Mode" and it will run without network access.

I'm keeping a list of games which are possible purchases which I might get at the end of the sale if they aren't further reduced in the daily sales. Here it is so far:

  • Titan Quest
  • Trine
  • Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
  • Killing Floor
I've still not looked through the complete list yet either. :p

I'm thinking of getting Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast as well, but does anyone know if it will work on Windows 7 or not?

Yep just set your account to offline mode :)

However I strongly advise you do this before you you leave your internet connection

that way you can test it works so you don't get any surprises.

Also as for backups don't use the backup feature, just go to c: >program files and copy the steam fold.

Simply paste it into your news program files and run steam it will automatically sort it's self out when you load it up (will require an internet connection first time)

Hope this helps :)

You can put the Steam folder anywhere in fact, it doesn't have to go in the Program Files folder.

I was hoping for L4D2 for 9.99 or similar. When you can buy retail for 14.99 anything else is just a ripoff. (Especially when it is a Valve game) When INW* can sell it for 14.99 with a profit for them, postage and valve margin taken out 20.99 is just 'having a laugh'

I was hoping for a better deal aswell but i could not be bothered to wait 1/2 weeks for it to arrive by post, so much faster by getting it with steam.

It looks like I might have to invest in a new CPU/GPU and more memory for my system. While GTA does run, it's running in the 20's and feels very clunky compared to when I played it on the 360. The graphics also look quite buggy/glitchy for some reason. Textures seem very muddy as if they aren't loading properly, like, one building has really flat/muddy/washed out textures and the ones next to it looks fine. The shadows also look awful and view distance is annoying aswell because things are only popping into view when I get up close (yet I have all of the slider bars for view distance etc set to 30).

Yep it can even be on a different disk altogether, that's where mine is :)

ahh cool, defiantly going to have to do that rather than just copying it over every time i format :p

I always thought you had to do some long-winded crap to get steam working o nanother disk :o

Yes, my current Steam folder has been on external USB drive when used with my WinXP laptop, then moved to my gigabit LAN NAS, and is now on my boot drive. Once I get a second internal hard drive, it'll move to that.

It's pretty strange that you need to manually activate offline mode. I'd have thought that if you started steam up and there was no connection, it would go into offline mode by default. Is there any setting you can force that to happen?
