NEW STEAM DEALS!!!!

Yeah I think I'll do the same and just copy the whole folder since I have to format at some point in the next few days, got an mklink in place to keep steamapps on the slave drive and the client on the C:\ drive, but may as well just try copying the whole folder.

You can get game issues if you don't bother reinstall the Steam client when you format and just run it off a slave. It doesn't happen very often and I'm not sure how many games can mess up but Valve ones do - I had lots and lots of problems with TF2 just randomly quitting with a hex error until I just installed the client as normal. Although that was a while back, maybe they have sorted the problem what caused that and it's all fine now - just wanted to mention it.

I've never had any issues. But I was worried the first time I moved the folder so did this:
a) Move the steam folder to another drive
b) Reinstall steam over the new steam folder

I expect this would solve any problems like those you describe. When Steam is started up, it will scan the games and detect they are all downloaded, and all should be fine.

Flibby, your rig sucks. It will get pwned by a PS3

Lil tip on the download location tweaking, I've found it helps if you consider timezones. So for example West Coast USA (Los Angeles, Seattle, San Jose etc) is around 8hrs behind the UK, meaning that in the morning/afternoon most people in those regions will be asleep). Then when you hit late evening it may be worth shifting to eastern europe e.g. Finland, Russia etc who are a couple of hours ahead of us). Stuff like Benelux, France, Germany etc may not be the best since they are only 1hr time difference from us.

edit: bit of an obvious one but it's also worth downloading multiple games at the same time to increase your proportion of the bandwidth when servers are maxed out, instead of 1x 300k/sec you'll probably get 2x 290k/sec or similar.

Can somone explain how usenet maxses out at around 800kbs yet when I dl from steam i can have that goin at 780kbs (dling Pahncrd's Oblivion Enhanced Edition if anyone read that thread)and steam still does 200kbs on one dl and about 100-150 on another?

I'd have thought it would have had to reduce the speed of the other dl's rather than just seemingly adding on top of them ?

Not that it's not a nice surprise :)
