New System £2000 to Spend!!!!!!!

Well lets put it this way... if he buys a GX2 and 8GB of RAM I think he'll regret it in a relatively short period of time. The time to do crazy large upgrades like that is at the start of the tech cycle when it's all new and not going to be superceded in 6 months... not near the end when GPU power will double in a few months and a new CPU architecture will be out at the end of the year.

Then again maybe he won't regret it and at the end of the day it's his money, so i'll shut up now and leave him to it. :p

he wants to keep it for a longer period, without upgrading.

what... a £2,000 system with no raid0/1/5 on the os and game drives?

as for the ram tbh I would prolli go with the ocz 8gb of ddr2 myself i always regret getting lower capacity ram modules when they sudenly are no longer enough. ddr3 is going to be silly money for ages yet so 8gb of ddr2 for a lot less than half the price of 4gb ddr3... yes please.

a q6600 g0

a 9800gtx/8800gtx/3870x2 maybe with sli or crossfire option

2-4 low capacity hdds (250gb or lowwer) for boot raided and a single large 1tb storage drive. the wd re2-gp is good. nice and quiet not the fastest 1tb about but never wanted my storage drives to be myself. its nice and cool/quiet also.

he said it would be a 3 year build, as he said before, therefore i spent more ont he DDR3 build for a better futureproof.

In taht case I would go ddr3 as well. But just the cheapist and do a part upgrade later. Same spec as I posted above but with
Asus Striker II Extreme nForce 790i Ultra SLi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
OCZ 2GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Gold (2x1GB) Dual Channel DDR3 (OCZ3G13332GK)
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (768-P2-E831-AR)

The evga comes with a 90day upgrade direct with EVGA for the price difference only. So in 3 months get a better gpu for next to nothing. Not sure what the terms and conditions are though

Thanks for all the advice thats the great thing about this forum theirs lots of different views, well Ive had alook at all the comments made and it seems like a good idea to save myself a bit of money and get a system similar to this one.

That will leave me with around £400 for a new GFX in a few months time :)

Not sure what monitor to get yet still thinking about that one

Few questions would that mem be fine for an overclock of the Q6600 to around 3.5ghz?

If i go with this board will a be able to upgrade to an Nvidia GPU in a few months?

Ive heard rumours that the ATI GPU might be similar to whats about now is this right?

Cheers again for all your comments Blue.

Afaik don't exgaggerate on ram/mobo/cpu premium prices, just get ddr2-q6600 etc and spend the saved money on nicer speakers/monitor/perhiperals...

Tbh I got tired with the many fps thing and recon my current spec is perfect for games for at least 6 months.
Instead, I bought myzelf Z5500's, a Razer mouse (Diamondback 3g) and a wheel for racing games.

A few things tho: Dont even think of 32 bit vista. Get 64...
Really think of it, monitors speakersetcetc drop less in price than the top range gfx card/ cpu, I'd just get a nice 28'' screen instead of paying the premium for something unneeded atm. Buy an upgrade set when needed in the future and save yourself (cash for) a few hundreds of beers.

That is a good decision, and it's nice to see see a man who can use his sense in the face of people telling him to buy the most expensive re-hashed cards available now before a major architectural change is due. You would have regretted it, trust me. :)

Go for the version of the OCUK panel with HDCP... is it the Yakura or something? There's loads of details around on ze web. It's by far the best purchase at the moment, get it while it's still around so cheap, i'm tempted myself!

HD

Another change i would make to that is to scrap those 2x 150GB Raptors... they are hideously loud and my case vibrated so badly I wanted to scream, god knows what 2x would be like! I swapped mine for a 320GB Samsung Spinpoint F1 and haven't looked back since, they are just as fast in 9/10 situations and about 100x quieter. Raptors really hold few benefits for the average home user, they are getting very long in the tooth. See this thread for more details and benches http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17850232 :)

Also, and this is quite important, if you are after a 1TB drive have a re-think on that Samsung. Yes, it's blindingly fast, but it's also got concerns over reliability according to many reports on ze interweb (lots of RMA's on them) and has a shorter 3 year warranty, which on a 1TB drive is not what i'd be wanting with all that precious (Gollem voice) data!. The Western Digital RE2 1TB GP drive is not only low-power and very efficient (verrry quiet too), but backed by a 5 year warranty and should be very, very reliable as a data drive. Personally i wouldnt use the Samsung F1's for anything other than a boot drive in 320GB format.

RAM

Also consider PC8000 or PC8500 RAM like the Gskill... that Crucial Tracer is over-priced for PC6400 RAM and at least with PC8000/PC85000 you are guaranteed a good overclock with 4GB of RAM.

:)

Ok thanks for all the info am away for a few days will check your recommendations when i get back ;)

One question will the Asus Rampage Formula x48 board work fine with Nvidia GPU as i might go for a 8800GTX now and a new GT200 GPU when they come out sometime this year?

Cheers Blue.

Personally I'd go for 8800GTX SLI, which should work out cheaper than the x-fire solution. Obviously you'd need an SLI board for this.

At present DDR2 systems are still better value than DDR3.

lol ok then whats the best Sli board out there DDR2 spec.

Do you really think you would need one Sli when the new GPU's come out?

You don't need SLI GTX at all... HangTime obviously didn't read the entire thread where it says GT200 is out soon and the 8800GTX will then be obselete. It's a rubbish idea. Just stick with your current plan of a fast single card then upgrade to next-gen soon, and don't let yourself be swayed every 5 seconds when someone posts "get SLI". :p

Also stick with the Intel X38/X48 chipsets, Nvidia are pap in comparison, barring the SLI support.

Good answer m8 makes life easier :)

Remember that f you are getting the TR Ultra-120 Extreme which I have, you are also going to need a fan to attach to it. I am currently using the Scythe S-FLEX 1600RPM fan and I have managed to get to 3.6GHz easily.

Thats got a Air flow: 63.7 CFM with 28.0 dB(A) are there any better options about for better air flow but are as quieter remembering that every 3dB(A) is either 50% noisier or quieter.

how this:
Delta 120mm Focussed Flow Fan (EHE)
- Rated speed: 1400 RPM
- Output - 190 CFM
- Decibels - 59dBA

:D

no seriously, hows these?:
