New to BT, some questions.

I've been forced to make the switch from NTL to BT due to a housemove. For quickness I used BT which I intend to do until my contract is up.

I'm getting 2meg download and about 400kbs on upload. Will this improve if I ditch the homehub and buy my own Adsl router/modem?

Do a speedtest at http://speedtester.bt.com/

Post the results (including sync and profile). Most likely case is you have a stuck profile. A call to BT and they will put some WD40 on it.

Also, it wouldn't have made a difference on time if you went to a different supplier.

Ah the postcode function on Bt site now works for my house, before it didnt. Its saying my max is 2MB so I guess thats my lot. Is it still worth phoning them up?

Well I phoned BT they support staff said it takes 15 days for the line to stabilize. Is that correct? They said I should see some improvement after that time or phone them back.

Took me an age to clean off all the bloatware that comes on that homehub install CD

Despite all the bad things i've heard I'm getting a good signal all over the house with it.

Yes, it takes 15 days to stabilize however I didn't notice much difference.

Well I'm approximately 10 days in to my BT Total Broadband experience and only use Netgear hardware.

I live a couple of miles from the exchange, and get 5312kbps down, and 448kbps up. It's been like that since they pressed the 'turbo' button, or more precisely turned off the 'artificially slow down' switch.

So basically then in 15 days time I phone India up again to bend their ear?

I knew it would be a pain going from a near faultless NTL service for god knows how many years to Adsl. Didnt realise how lucky I was.

Virgin Media phoned us up tonight to ask why we cancelled. "Because bloody NTL turned down the chance to lay the cabling when the houses went up"

Would you have stayed with us if we had?

"yes you lost yourself a developements worth of £60 a months"

I hope virgin now sort out their policy of not having enough funds to wire up new developments

Edit How do I find out how far I am from the exchange and is the exchange those box things by the side of the road?

Thanks for the link, going by that I'm not even 1/4 of a mile tops from the village exchange. My road is a new road off the high street so all the cabling is brand new. Surely that must be better than 2 meg at that distance.

DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3625 kbps

You will most likely have a stuck profile.

(very quiet night tonight on the Enta network...)

I've been trying that test for two days, still can't get it to load :confused:

it just times out trying to load.

What does your router sync at in the menu? Go to 192.168.1.254 (if it is not that, go start, run, cmd, type in ip config, type in the default gateway in your web browser.) Find where it says connection or anything to do with the sync rate. Post what it says.

You can also call BT and ask them what your profile is at.

Hmmm at the minute looking through all the menu's under advanced can't find anything to do with sync rate.

10 days for the "learning period", but the IP profile should increase within hours, and the rate adaption will run until the end of time.
Some ISPs will hide behind the 10 day thing, but if things haven't got better within 3 days it's not likely to change after that. If an ISP tells you to wait 15 days, they're talking crap and need either a) a MAC request or b) directions to the BTw guides with all that information in them.

Right just had a nice hour on the phone to BT India. They say there is a line fault. I'm still getting 2 meg almost bang on and doing the phone number check I should be getting 6.5-8mb.

They have now got me removing the front plate of the master socket to plug directly into the test socket to see if the speed improves after 6 hours. They are saying this will confirm whether its a fault with the front of the master socket or the line to the house.

Does this sound right or are they fobbing me off???
