Started folding today, not really sure why, but it helps science so whatever. Anyway I wondering what is the best way (if any) to speed up folding so it doesn't take a whole day to do 1 WU. Using the "default" program for folding. Temps during this are 22°C. My spec is:

AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE 3.1ghz
Coolermaster Hyper TX3
4GB DDR3 1600mhz
ATi Radeon HD 5770 1GB
Msi 770-G45
500w PSU (branded, not random
500gb hdd
dvd drive
etc.
Thanks to all.

Hello there. Welcome to the forums and Team 10.

With a multi-core CPU you will want to run the Windows SMP client.

All the info you need is in the sticky at the top of this sub-forum. The client you want is http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

and the official guide to setting it up is here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinSMPGuide

The SMP WU's can take a while even on fast machines. I don't run a Phenom so I couldn't say if a day for 1 WU is good or bad for your particular setup.

Ah okay thanks. Wasn't sure if mine was the SMP. I'll download that when this WU is done (192/250)
Is the client for GPU worth it or not?
Thanks!

You can still give it a go on an ATI card, it's just the way things are at the moment, the GPU clients are far more effective on Nvidia cards. On an ATI the gains probably wouldn't be worth the noise, heat and power draw. It is strange to think that when the GPU clients were first released, they worked only on ATI cards.

Welcome to the team and forums!

Although using the best client for your PC will give you the most gains, you can also speed up your folding by overclocking (if you're willing to go down that road...) - though please don't ask me how to do that on an AMD chip as I've only ever overclocked Intels :o

With the SMP client on that chip @ 3.6 you will see around 12mins per frame on the 491 point units, once you have completed 10 units you will begin to recieve bonuses, this will make those units worth around 2.2k if the system is left folding 24/7.

I noticed your rig is at stock however 3.6ghz is the only baseline I can give as thats all my dual ever ran at.

Good to see new team members

Welcome!

Dont worry about the times, My i7 takes 34mins per frame which is about 2 and a bit days! To be fair, they are 70000 point monsters 28k ppd.

Oh that's nice Philly.

"Your times are great! If it was a high-end, overclocked Intel quad-core with HT running SMP with advanced WUs that provide 70K points every 2 to 3 days" :p

Thanks for the input guys. I'll finish my current WU soon, and then move on to the SMP client. A few questions:
1. In order to get it to run dual core, at the end of advanced configuration, do I just add the -smp tag?
2. Provided that I set up a passcode for mu username, will my Wu from one account count on another?
Thanks.

1: That's correct.

2: A passcode is linked to one username. If you change your username you need a new passcode. Getting a passcode wont affect any points you have already gained on a particular username.

You will need a passcode and complete 10 WUs to start getting bonuses.
