New Top Gear (2011) BBC 2 8PM!

A ludicrous comparison.

It was a cheap and cheerful imitation of the Mythbusters set up, testing an extremely specific set of circumstances, completely lazy and not even executed well.

Why not write to the BBC and complain? Then hit them where it hurts with the viewing figures and tune into something else next weekend.

I see you're jumping on the "Turn it off if you don't like it" bandwagon.

I personally don't see what issue people have with others being critical of a series which they've been very fond of for many years and has the potential to be great when they get it right.

This does not mean you have to lap up everything they put out or stop watching all together.

Surprisingly some people are disappointed in varying levels of quality throughout the show and let it be known when this happens.

To make a lazy analogy, people don't stop supporting or caring about their chosen football club when they start losing/playing bad football, and aren't told to bugger off if they dare criticise.

Because it gets bloody tedious reading the same people moaning about the same damn thing every time it's on and it completely stifles any discussion other people might want to have about the actual episode around all the LOL SO SCRIPTED BORED NOW BUT WONT TURN OFF HUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRR comments.

If they really don't like it that much, I really don't understand why they feel the need to continually subject themselves to the boring tedium of an unfunny predictable samey scripted motoring show.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was just the odd comment on a bad episode but you could probably dig out a Top Gear thread from 2008 and find half the people moaning in this thread, posting virtually the same comments week on week then.

My thoughts exactly. It's not like it's changed format recently. It's been this way for a fair few series now. If you don't like it, vote with your remote and change channel.

FWIW, I find there are better episodes but there's been very few TG episodes that have generally left me disappointed.

It was rubbish, but even Top Gear rubbish is better than the other doss of TV. That's why I didn't switch it off.

Top Gear also has a bit of a habit of being Good (Atom V8) Bad (Yeti + Dreary 'celebrity' in a **** box) Good (911 piece) so it is worth sticking around to the end.

Because "LOL THAT WAS BRILLIANT" comments are so much more constructive.

If people didn't like it, they wouldn't watch it and wouldn't waste their time posting about it, the reason most people here post criticising it is because they do like it, and they have a licence to criticise when they've been so fond of it and watched for so long, I don't see why you expect people to either stop watching or not discuss the shortcomings on a discussion board.

Or do you want things to be one big circle jerk, lest you find it tedious.

It's hard to achieve much more around all the pointless whining.

Well you'd hope so but apparently that's not the case.

the reason most people here post criticising it is because they do like it
Well they sure fooled me!

Or people could discuss the good and bad points of each episode, but these people get shot down by those with your mindset, this is why it's hard to achieve much more.

You can surely understand the concept of criticising something you like out of frustration of it being subpar compared to its usual standards?

This notion that has cropped up that if you criticise it then it must mean you hate it and shouldn't watch it is a lazy argument, those people couldn't care less and won't post, those who have a vested interest do.

For a limited period, yeah I could understand, but for some people it seems to have been 'subpar' for years now, so surely you reach a point where you decide enough is enough and you just stop watching and move on with your life rather than keep watching and moaning about how bad it still is?

No 'those' people don't, the people who get shot down are the boring sods who just post pointless comments about being bored, being scripted, not funny anymore, Top Gear hasn't been the same since the great series of 06 etc. etc.

These people add nothing constructive and frankly I (and others judging by some of the other posters responses) would prefer it if they just took a long walk off a short pier.

They have the ability to pull out amazing episodes in a series of mediocrity, along with their (usually) great specials.

It's this hot and cold nature that keeps people watching, if it was consistently poor, most would switch off, it's the fact that they still have the ability to make great episodes, and then churn out tripe the next week which frustrates people.

People have been watching this format for 8 years now, you don't just dump something you've followed for that long.

I thought the Yeti segment was great (lovely 308 as well) and like or dislike John Bishop, he is one of the highest profile comedians in the UK at the moment, so I'd say that qualifies him as a celebrity.

The Yeti segment was really bordering on tedious. I watch 5 gear if I was 'consumer' advice, I watch top gear when I want to hear tyres screaming and engines banging off of the limiter or other generally interesting car themed activities

I'm not a fan of SIRPC at the best of times. Interviewing celebrities who almost always have no interest whatsoever in cars so they can drum up publicity for their new Film/book/tour is just not interesting. I know they've got to have it because of the "Celebrity culture" but it is so freaking boring.

But ignore me, I'm not allowed an opinion :o.
