New toy (and pics of my 'portable' setup...)

Christ alive, this has got to be the most pointless argument I've ever seen on here...

To be honest I see where badbob is coming from, and I respect his knowledge in hifi and that sort of stuff, Rockbox is a great piece of software, but it's not for everyone. I think penski knows what he wants and it suits him well, so it might be better to just leave it and all?

Again, I make the breast analogy - They're wonderful things. I just have no need for them. :D

Jesus christ I never knew people could get so violent about firmware. Shut the hell up, you're worse than some religious nut.

How easy is it to build one of these amps as a DIY project? Thinking about either buying or making one for my 555s.

Penski,

I've got the same mp3 player and was thinking about a headphone amp for my Grados. I don't know much about them but is it really for driving headphones that need a lot of input or does it make much difference in sound quality to smaller, easier to power headphones, if you've tried?

Also, how long does the battery last, if you've had it long enough to drain it?

Nice, I use a penguinamp myself, it makes such a difference...

For me it's

Nokia 6230 -> Modded hands free kit -> Penguinamp -> HD25 concorde

Sounds great and the HD25's block out a lot of the outside noise...

I keep meaning to try some beyers, I love how huge they are. :D

^ EDIT: I found my grados didn't really benefit much from an amp, but mine are the oddball allessandro MS-1's...

What model Grados are they? What's the impedence?

I'd say it's worth it because you're not running the player flat out all the time...The amp allows you to wind the player in a bit and let the amp take care of the volume. :)

Question (time), what's the battery life like on one of those amps? I already have one for my main rig but it's not portable due to it needing to be plugged into the mains.

They're the Grado SR80 headphones and impedance is 32ohms and 94dB sensitivity. They are quite quiet when plugged directly into the iriver. At full volume didn't enjoy listening to music on a plane journey but i know that is partly due to the open design of the headphones. I do know though that if i plugged my hifi amp into the grados i wouldn't hear the plane noise :p (assuming i could get 240V on sardine class :))
(I don't understand the relevance with impedance and sensitivity as reviews say the SR60's are supposed to be able to be driven more easily without a headphone amp but have exactly the same impedance and sensitivity as the SR-80's).

I want LOUD!! :D

I emailed the fleabay seller in question, and quote:

"I haven't measured battery life, but numerous customers have reported getting up to 20 hours on a new battery."

Wasn't anyone around you bothered about the sound leakage from your Grados? I wouldn't dare use my Alessandro MS-1's on a train or plane!! :p

As for my tuppence on the ridiculous Rockbox argument: I have it installed on my 4G iPod for one reason only- drag and drop functionality. I believe that the SQ is also a little improved too, and I can set a much higher volume than the standard firmware, but that's it. The array of extra games and apps that comes with it is ridiculous, I deleted them straight away.

badbob vs penski, the ultimate battle

-we should get iBot in here to spice things up a little !

LMAO. True.

Well it played itself out into the ultimate pointless battle :D
I really hope you are both done now but I'm gonna say a couple of words about it.

Seeing the manual below with 147 pages really shows how advanced and impressive Rockbox is. I bought my iriver second hand with it already installed and that's what I use. I tried the original firmware for a day or two and have never used it since. But if you're happy with what you got then fine.

Batterys
Just checked the penguinamp website who say
The amp needs one 9V battery for powering. You can expect 40-60 hours of battery life using alkaline batteries. Rechargeable batteries will last about 20 hours (depends on the battery type, music and headphones). Optionally a 9-18V DC external wall adaptor can be used to power the amp.

Oh penski if you stick with stock firmware, use the US or Korean firmware, as the volume cap is removed (UK has it) for line out/headphone socket.

You do know why I started this thread don't you...? Volume isn't really an issue any more. ;)
