Recession? What recession? ;)

I acquired an E61 second hand from my father. It's a year old so break in is done. Having enjoyed it for two weeks now the only negative thing with this car is Fuel Economy :D But it is simply so much fun to drive this car and it is truly astonishing. The handling is absurd and the speed is breathtaking. The car weighs nearly two tonnes but performs just as well as my best friends 996.

some facts:

- V10 90 degree mounted engine pumping out 507BHP.
- SMG semi automatic gearbox.
- 0-62MPH is 4.8 seconds
- Top speed limited to 155MPH. Remove the limit and it hits 205+

For the untrained it is just another BMW touring/estate. For the more trained eye it is a nice 5- Series estate. For the car enthusiast it is drool

Sometimes the looks the car gets is embarrasing to be frank.
The most fun part is when some spotty teen or older red-neck or testosterone filled male in a tuned up "normal" car think they can beat this car.

Having driven it for two weeks now I'm starting to getting the jist of how to drive it. It is infact a monster sportscar in a family outfit.

Initially I drove in the D mode, which is automatic, and left the gear ratio unchanged at default. This gave rather jerky and slow shifts. I now nearly always drive in S mode (gear change with the F1 style paddles) and with the second highest gear ratio. There is an additional ratio (6) however this can only be achieved in M mode and DSC, Traction Control, switched off.
I leave that for track day since it would be madness driving around populated areas like this.

The noise from the engine is sublime. For those that have not heard it live I can describe it as a mix of a F430 and Aston Vanquish. If you search for E60 on the tube you can find some demonstrations, like this

Unfortunately some low-life scum keyed the boot door

To top up a great day at 3pm today I was made redundant, which was expected. However, at 5pm I got a new job from a firm where I really wanted to work. That's three months paid leave, thank you very much :D

All I can say about this car: WOW.

nice car, bet it's tons of fun

quick question though, is 507bhp enough to get to 205mph+ when the thing is shaped like a brick ?, I don't think so, and not sure the gearing would allow it anyway even without restriction.

The front of the car actually appears quite fluid, its the rest of the car that's shaped like a brick :p

I've not had the chance to try it unrestricted. But judging from M5owners forum and official tests and statements from BMW it is good for 205+.
Saloon or Estate, horses for courses. I prefer the estate since it is more discreet :)

Git. And to reiterate; Git.

I've only seen one of these on the road - much more of a sleeper than the saloon simply because there are so few of them. Very nice.

This is at the top of my wanted list.

Coming from an E36 Touring owner .... im jealous :(

Drool?
Really?

It's a powerful and fast estate than handles well for a car of it's size and weight.....but drool? Can't say it makes me salivate at all TBH.

Nice car though, and it sounds like you're really enjoying it.....which is kind of the point.

Streamlining the back of the car is massively important too, perhaps equally as important as the front. This car loses on the shaped-rear stakes, but it's damn nice and I wish I had one.

I would have thought so, easily.

OP - lovely car. Wolf in family cruiser clothing.
