New World MMO

Cracks me up how a character name is so important to people, just stick a few numbers on the end.
some games let streamers reserve theres...

kinda entitled imo.... I bet you can find loads of steam accounts with a lot of streamers names that are older than their twitch accounts are

even back in the good old days it wasn't always possible to get your name in a game, and it's not because someone else was "stealing it"

Preload at 4pm this afternoon apparently. Very looking forward to this. :)

As MMOs are my favourite genre of game I'll be keeping a very close eye on this, very interested to see how it all pans out, not in the next 30 days but in the next 3 months. If its still going strong on Dec 31st then I'll likely buy it in the New Year and join in.

Still not sure what server I'm going to aim for.

There are some I know I don't want to be on such as the streamer fools or anything with a large non-English speaking player base.

I'm not sure if such coordinated efforts may upset the natural balance of the game. If everyone on a server was sweaty hardcore PvP there would be little PvE progression, gathering (and thus crafting) would be diffcult, and the PvP would just be big zerg fests and not the fun little battles people probably want/expect.

surprised you've decided not to get it given your praise for it. i was on edge but have now requested refund and will like you, wait and see.

It does some things well and does some things very much not well. I actually suspect that some of the folks who are enormously praising it and not seeing the faults are doing so because they are blinded by desperation for a new MMO, I'm taking a more balanced wait and see approach to see if the game has legs.

Coming from a non-mmo history none of the supposed issues really bother me too much. There isn't really much i've played in recent times that captivated my attention span as the initial closed beta i participated in (the last one).

Have there been many recent non-subscription based MMOs that have done things better than New World?

You'd have to define "recent", you'd also have to define "better" , as you point out..you are coming from a non-mmo history so what you as a non-mmo'er consider to be better mechanically might not necessarily be considered better by an mmo'er.

Recent such that drawing a comparison is fair.

Well again, you'd need to define recent, are you talking the last year, the last 3 years, the last 5 years, the last 10 years? I compare every MMO to all the MMOs that I have played in the last 24 years because I compare them against the other titles in the genre, much as how I still compare games to Bioshock (despite its age) or Stalker (despite its age) or Skyrim (despite its age)

I don't know how recent is relevant in MMOs.. If you simply cannot form a response without a specific time period lets say 10 years, since anything outside that may not be suitable for comparison.

Well for me the entire lifespan of the MMO genre is relevant (as per my Bioshock/Stalker/Skyrim/Witcher 3 comparisons) but lets go with your 10 year time period. So, 2011 til now, are there any non-subscription games that do it better. I'd say yes, Guild Wars 2 and Elder Scrolls Online. However, thats my opinion based on my criteria for MMOs , as I say you'd probably need to define whats better and what isnt subjectively speaking.

I should also add that whilst I think Guild Wars 2 and Elder Scrolls Online are better when comparing non-subscription MMOs, neither of them would be in my top 5 MMOs of all time because all of my top 5 would be subscription MMOs as in my experiences the best subscription based MMOs are much better than the best non-subscription MMOs. (for the record , I'd put Guild Wars 2 as the best non-subscription MMO)

Preload is up for anyone interested :)

Haven't decided on server yet, but on balance of probability, will likely choose Bifrost. Looking forward to it, the beta scratched a bit of that old EQ itch but will see how things pan out over time.

And to counter this and show that this is all subjective. I couldn't play GW2 for more than a month at a time as it bored me and I found ESO much better.

These games require you to play them yourself to make up your mind.

Open beta was around 39gb so it would be nice to think a reduction has come about due to some performance/delivery improvements.

Bifrost could be a good call. Some UK interest shown but nothing zergy going on.

A reddit survey of ~1400 results was made over the last week and the following site put up to show the info: https://newworldsurvey.netlify.app/

Exactly, its very subjective because it depends what you seek in an MMO, I mean to be quite honest a lot of games that call themselves MMOs are not even MMOs in my opinion as they lack features that imo are requirements to BE an MMO. Its why its very hard to simply blanket answer that MMO X is better than MMO Y. Good to see that you mention ESO though as those were the 2 non-subscription MMOs I answered with

Just purchased this and pre downloading now. Not played an MMO since LOTRO over 10 year ago, absolutely loved playing that and sank god knows how many hours into it.
