New XCOM announced.

As i said in the console forum:

So a game has had a big name slapped on the box, but is developed by no one involved in the creation of the original titles and bares no resemblance to its predecessors?

Ladies and gentlemen, i feel we have another farcry 2 on our hands.

Oh and Bioshock 2 was rubbish imo, so i have little hope for Marin making a good effort of this.

X-COM... FPS... Miss... The... Point...

Fresh take on a classic
No...

"Reimagining" of the franchise
NO!....

Players will take the role of an FBI agent whose job is to identify and eliminate an unknown extraterrestrial threat.

So they've just bought the rights to use the word "Xcom", basically.

Sigh.

Wait wait... FBI? So you're not even an XCom agent?! ffs.

XCom 1 & 2 are still fun to play :p

We've had...3 (?) crappy sequels (afterlight/aftershock/afterbirth) so I don't think another crappy sequel is really going to change much.

Just pretend nothing after TFTD was ever made; works for me :p

not turn based... wut? is it still Xcom or an HL mod...?!?

re-release X-Com Enemy Unknown with latest gfx and the same midi sounds and ill be in heaven...

+1

I was replaying TFFD the other day. Man that game is hard. Had to do a cruise ship mission not long after starting, so no armour or decent guns. Think I loaded it 20 or more times trying to do it without losing more than 1/2 my squad. Realised I was never going to get close to finishing the game though, that one mission took up all my gaming time for a weekend!

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for the moment. Interceptor wasn't so bad, they managed to keep the whole research / upgrade model and apply it to a completely different game type.

If they can do it with an FPS, with squad control, civilians to protect and destructible buildings, it might be worth a shot.

The most important thing will be to keep the tenseness - the player needs to be creeping around, scared silly, rather than running and gunning hundreds of aliens.

I used to play xcom apoc in realtime mode.
I seem top remember the turn-based combat in apocalypse was very badly implemented. I tried and failed to play that way, and ended up going real-time as it was the only way it was playable.

Not a bad game, but nowhere near as good as the first two games.

The real-time wasn't much better.

I remember opening a door, and being shot 3 times by an alien, before the fog of war on the other side was lifted :p

The total destruction of buildings was a hoot, tho. I remember deliberately starting files in warehouses, and literally smoking the aliens out :p

Apoc wasn't as good, however. The lack of random maps for UFO missions was a big downer for me, along with the lack of heavy weapons platforms, which I really missed from the first two.
