New York

A true case of, "If you dont ask, you dont get"

Ive just had an email from our hotel, they've upgraded us to a king size corner suite because we are going for a birthday celebration :D \o/

Oh I forgot in my previous post. There a Dinner across the road from the main enterance to Grande Central station, I forget its name but the eggs benedict in there for breakfast where awesome and bloody cheap too.

It's kinda built under a road bridge.
Pershing Square.

One of the best things about New York, was the Marriot bed, best nights sleep I've had to date in my life, stayed at the Renaissance in time square, smallish rooms(due to location) free due to marriot points and just awesome.

We spent very very little day to day, we went to a couple places, like Hawaiin tropics, scantily clad hotties serving food, walking around in bikini's and surprisingly good food. We drank all over the place, but not much, but it was very cheap drinks everywhere we went. Some jazz bars, even the comedy clubs were cheap, maybe $7-10 a drink, but the amount of alcohol you'd get and the size of the glass, it was only £5-6 for an amount of booze you'd be paying £15 for in London.

It was only me and my mate though so we didn't spend a lot of time looking for posh restaurants, but we did go to some nice places.

Everyone was surprisingly friendly given the idea of New York us brits must have gotten from 20 years of tv based in New York.

The ferry tour thing was pretty awesome, if cold, we went for the twilight one so it went around most of Manhattan pointing out buildings, and where the twin towers were, quite a lot of interesting stuff, as it turned around and came back around the island it was basically dark so the cities lights were on, got some great pics of the skyline and the ferry goes as close to the statue of Liberty as you can get really.

Want to go back at some point, only did Empire state during the day so want to do that at night. Walked around Central park for a while and is a nice place.

Theres a lot of other things I never had time for and due to being so time limited I spent the last day just walking around manhattan not really doing anything, so saw a heck of a lot of the buildings and interesting stuff.

I have an ex who lived in New York a few years ago and so got to travel there quite a bit in the 3 years we were together.

Central park is good, it is zoned with different 'themes' for different areas. It does get busy though.

My Ex lived in Queens for part of the time and it was a pretty nice and safe area when I was there (Forest Hills on the MTA map). She then moved back in to Manhatten around 96th st East and I also visited one of our friends in Harlem. Out of those places, Harlem was the most dodgy looking but I had no problems travelling alone in the early hours from Harlem on the Subway down to the bottom of Central park and walking along the bottom of the park (on the street, not in the park) and then on the MTA back up the East side of Manhattan (there was not an easy crossover between the blue and green lines north of the park).

Battery Park was a fairly nice stroll and you can walk up the East side along the river. There is a shopping centre (next to lightship Ambrose) after the ferry jetties. Just on the other side of it you can get a fantastic view of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Another sight which may be worth a visit is USS Intrepid an old WWII aricraft carrier turned in to a museum. They also had one of the decomm'd Concordes there when I visited.

Greewich Village is great if you want to be around the student type 'candles and knitted hats' crowd :D.

The Museum of Natural History was good but I think we stole most of the interesting things from around the world first so I still prefer the Natural History or the British Museum in London. The Guggenheim was ok but not my cup of tea really.

Don't forget there is more than New York.

Why not try Bear Mountain. There are coaches which go from Port Authority IIRC. Google Maps estimates 49 minutes by car from Manhattan. I stayed over night there at the Bear Mountain Inn with my ex and we did a fair bit of walking. If you like hiking and nature then it is great. Be aware though that lots of people decend there around the lake for camping at the weekends and leave the place covered with litter.

Atlantic City is also just under 3 hours away by car or coach. Stay overnight and enjoy the Casinos and shows.

Coney Island is aroudn 30 minutes away and Long Beach is under 3 hours.

Lots to do and see.

Enjoy your trip

Amazed no one but Rim' has mentioned the Guggenheim. It's phenomenal. If art isn't your thing, at least go there (it's in a great location for Central Park - as far as I can remember...We did the Guggenheim, National History & Central Park in one day as they were close but I may be getting confused) and check out the building. It's stunning - but then again, I love architecture.

<3 NYC. One of my favourite places to go in the world. Enjoy! It's impossible not to have a great time there - it's an amazing place.

Gah, missed out on my last day there, ended up walking from the twin towers site, zigzagged up through all the way to central park, up through central park, to the bit where Lennon was shot, up and around, had a quick look for the Seinfeld diner, walked across and by the time I got to the Guggenhein it was closing. Still a very interesting building to see in person and a nice area to just walk around and see all the buildings, was hitting dusk so walking just across the road into Central park you're right by the large lake you always see people running around in films/tv, and you can see so many great buildings all around the park starting to light up.

Greenwich village is where we went a few nights, found some really nice little bars with live jazz music and the like, didn't really feel studenty as much as a mid 20's to mid 30's hang out bars, might just be the wrong bars. Very nice vibe though, relaxed, cheap drinks, friendly with good music.

Really really want to get back again, and soon, though starting to think the money this time round might be better spent in the long term on a Marriot hotel bed, you can get the boxspring, mattress, topper and linen for not a bad price for such a massively fantastic bed.......... so tempting :p
