Hi there guys, been lurking for a while tryin to make sense of whats what on the market now and still havent got a clue what works with what for best performance.

First of I used to be content with playing retro games and games from the early to mid 2000's on my laptop whilst at base and then having my up-to-date gaming fix on my xbox360 when at home, but now this is my only source of gaming it is not stimulating my gaming needs due to the lack of games on the console.

The games I play on xbox are limited to Battlefield 3, Forza 4, Fifa 2013 and Skyrim. 80% of my time spent on Battlefield as I'm an ex-solider and always a big war game fan. And due to there being next to no multi-player support on Operation Flashpoint i'm not left with much other choice.

My Scenario: Like i said the xbox isnt giving me the gaming experience I want anymore and my laptop has well and truely bit the dust now and is fit for the bin.

So, I want to look into building my own rig, for most part gaming, a fair bit of internet browsing ie. research, forums, streaming videos etc, no downloading of music or anything that can attract virus's in mass numbers as i'm sick of wiping my system and having to start again every 2 months.

The games that I'm looking to play are ARMA 2 (and 3 when it launches) the DayZ mod for ARMA 2 and i know that this series is a very cpu demanding game.

I basically am looking to build a system from scratch that will play ARMA 2 on the highest settings as it is an older game now, and be able to also play any new tittles that are out or coming out in the next year on a higher settings as possible for my budget.

My budget ideally is around £800 all-in... and for this i require everything apart from a monitor and speaker system, my plan is to run it through my Sony 32" tv which runs at 1080i (as it is old and 1080p didnt exist when i bought it) and for the sound i have a sony home theatre system linked up to the tv which plays in full 5.1 via optical output.

so HDMI out put on the graphics and optical output is a must for me.

What would you more knowledgable folk reccomend for my build, as i said i require everything, complete rig, OS, keyboard and mouse, and micro phone/headset for team speaking (one that is xbox360 compatible would be ideal as i need to replace mine today anyway)

My budget is not fixed at £800 but that is a ball park figure of what i want to spend not what i can spend.

Also another thing to note is that I dont want any fancy space ship looking case with led lights all over it, just something plain, simple and practical that serves its purpose and possibly looks quite sleek and elegant but as it is a case i dont want to spend over the odds on one.

Thanks for any advice folks

Don`t know much about headphones, so not sure how good the the Ozone is.
Case is fairly decent for the price.
Have included an ssd for OS and a couple of your favourite games. Hdd for storage.
Psu is modular for better cable management.
But the spec will give you some idea, as to what you can get for about £800.

Mini-itx mobo with wifi built in. The prodigy case is mini-itx only but I thought you might like it.

Nvidia 660 is giving you cuda support, HDAO lighting and some games just plain favour nvidia cards. Mini bluetooth keyboard with bulit in track pad, which would work on the xbox as well. The xbox gamepad includes the wireless receiver for the PC so you can use any xbox pad with the PC. If you have a wired gamepad you could just plug that in via USB.

I'm not a guru on headsets but I'll guarantee the headset i've used is better than the xbox headset by a country mile ;)

Hope this helps, I look forward to seeing what you settle on :)

Guys thanks for getting back to me, the prices and specs are what I had in mind, something along those lines, willing to spend a little bit more on a better mouse with a few extra buttons on for things like leaning around corners, changing rates of fire etc in FPS games. The key-board looks fairly generic and ideal for my needs, although I may have to look into wireless as the set-up of the room I'm in is not ideal as there is no desk or table at present.

Another thing that I am unsure about is overclocking, I dont know if i'd feel comfortable doing this, but would it be worth me considering doing?

Also with RAM being so reasonably priced now, Would it be worth me installing 16 rather than 8 just to save me doing it down the line.

I say reasonably priced now, last time I had a pc ram was still in MB and 256mb was as much as you could buy in one pack back then and I always remember it being quite expensive.

In essence I dont want to be going inside for upgrades for a good while so I will pay a little bit extra to save me doing this, and is the system you guys proposing to me going to be upgradeable in the future?

You could go with 16gb but at the moment nothing really warrants the use of 16gb, but it's personal choice and I run 16gb of the same ram specced :)

Mouse is personal preference, I don't think you can go wrong with the majority of mouses on Ocuk.

Overclocking is a must :D, luckily with the K series cpu it just a case of upping the multiplier and slight voltage change and your away, you don't have to to mad :)

Thats something I overlooked when spec'ing my needs to you guys it needs to be wifi enabled to connect to my internet as the router is hard wired into the other end of the room and i dont fancy trailing wires.

Is the Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 support wi-fi or will I need to buy a wi-fi card?

Honosuseri, anything is better than my current xbox headset its in pieces after the dog got hold of it, my 5th one this year too, want something a bit more durable that wont break every time I drop the pad.

You make over clocking sound so easy :) I have no idea how to do either, so when it comes to my build i'm hoping some one can talk me through overclocking my system whilst i set up the bios for the first time.

The only concern i have with overclocking is keeping my temperatures down as my budget isnt huge, and cant afford top of the line cooling gear.

I'm not a guru on headsets but I'll guarantee the headset i've used is better than the xbox headset by a country mile

But can you use it on the xbox?
Only specced the Ozone, as it was the cheapest, for use on the pc and xbox. Otherwise the OP needs to buy another set for the xbox.
But, ultimately comes down to the OP`s personnel preference.

(one that is xbox360 compatible would be ideal as i need to replace mine today anyway)

Also noticed, no hdd in your spec.

Thatd be ideal for my wifi needs, the router is litteraly 12feet away from where the PC will be living, i just dont want to be trailing a cable from one side of the room to the other.

Just noticed Hono build includes WIFI built in so on his build you don't need the card linked above.

All our builds have included a after market cooler, this will be ample to cool the cpu :)

I know the xbox uses a smaller jack than the average microphone/headphone set up, its not essential that it works on both, just something i'd like thats all to make my life that little bit easier, my main priority with regards to a head set is solely for game speak between players.

Overclocking is not a must, I've never overclocked anything because I prefer to keep temperatures low and noise down.

It's debatable as to whether overclocking actually gets more bang for buck because you'll probably spend more on cooling.

Like i say I'm new to all this PC stuff and overclocking is all new to me, and if for the time being I can play newest of games on highest settings without any problems and get good FPS i'm going to be more than happy.

Like I said the main game that I'll be playing is going to be ARMA 2 and its assocciated add-ons and DayZ mod until the stand alone is released and ARMA 3 next year but its impossible to predict the requirements of that till it hits the shelves. So if upgrades are required to play ARMA 3 on the highest settings then so be it, but as long as i can run ARMA 2 on the highest settings that'll make me more than happy.

I think I will end up going for the build suggested above by RJC and change out the mouse for one with extra buttons and have to do some research on a head set.

My concern about the headsets are that they look as if they'd block out sounds from my 5.1 being over both ears the way they are?? but not having used one its one thing I really need your advice on..

If you are playing online with people on comms you will want to be using headphones, as mic and speakers don't really work as they will hear all your sounds, not kind on the people you play with.

Playing solo then speakers are fine.

Ahhh i suppose this is true, annoys the hell out of me when i get that coming down my headset on xbox, but no one gets it from my end, but im guessing thats because of the poor quality of xbox standard headsets.

and as it is coming up to xmas, i could ask santa to bring me a nice set of gaming headphones.

all these little details I overlook, thanks for all your input and advice guys, this is a great forum, glad i chose this over some of the other ones around.

Cant wait to get my rig ordered now and up and running, my compensation cheque cant come quick enough!!
