"I've had a lot of texts from managers saying 'you must be mad going there'," said Pardew, 49, on Thursday.

"But it's one of the top five clubs in England. It's a daunting prospect but something I couldn't turn down."

It's from this quote, I've worked out why he's signed, he's clearly been drugged at the dinner Ashley had for him the other day and they must still be slipping him them this very moment, that or there was hypnotist on Ashley's payroll at the dinner, the man's deluded.

5th biggest club? Yes, in stadium capacity, actually we're even better than that, we're 4th in stadium capacity, and 3rd in club stadium capacity, but that counts for nothing. When was the last time one of the current clubs residing in the top quarter of the league were in a relegation battle, season before last? Well we were, lost a relegation battle, snap, played in the championship last season, snap again.

Sounds almost as deluded as the fans who say we're a big club, yes we're a big club in fanbase, and being able to get high gate numbers no matter how crap we're doing, but other than that no, we're really not, big clubs win trophies, big clubs qualify for European tournaments; big clubs win european trophies, we don't (championship trophy doesn't count) Intertoto maybe, but it ain't exactly something to write home to your mother about is it, it ain't the UEFA cup, or the CL trophy. People like that are only slightly less deluded than the muppets you see in the centre of town on a weekend night who insist on shouting "Shearer! Shearer! Shearer!..."

This is the best news I've heard all year!

Get in Agent Ashley!

5 and a half years too..

How much money do they have to spend???
However much they get for Carroll in Jan lol!!

Get your bets in for relegation now while the odds are higher.. that's what I'm doing :D

I don't know why you are all so surprised that Newcastle are in such a mess. Have you ever been in a Sports Direct store?

:p

The plan must be some sort of scheme to get Pardew a massive payout.

Get him in on a 5 year contract, sack him after 6 months, agree a settlement to pay off part of his contract.

To what end though? I could sort of understand if the aim was to screw over Newcastle but surely Mike Ashley wants them as a reasonably attractive proposition if he'd trying to get rid? Unless of course he's written off his investment and is now just aiming at extracting the maximum amount of fun out of upsetting the Newcastle fans. That could be the weirdest conspiracy theory I've ever jokingly posited - not least because it presumes a capacity for long term planning that has been thus far conspicuous by its absence in St James' Park.

have you ever seen a new manager 'unveiled' with nobody else from the club there?

no chairman no owner, not even a press officer...just shoved out on his own to face the cameras

the PR from newcastle really is shocking

I nearly choked on my tea when I heard Pardew had been given a 5.5yr contract, is this some sort of Ashley/Pardew conspiracy to plunder the club? sell Carrol, sack pardew after 6mths and split the payoff between them and then go into administration for good measure? :p

Pretty rough on hughton imo, hope he got a good payoff , even though its little consolation.

Doubt it, had a rubbish contract with only a few months left.

Pardew has probably been given 5 years so that when Ashley leaves next year and the new owners get rid of Pardew immediately he has a nice retirement package

Sack one average manager, and bring in another?

Great move by Newcastle, wonder what the odds are on them going down with that joker in charge? Could well be worth a punt.

Ive just £50 down on Newcastle to get relegated....odds i got on betfair was 4.1 i think or something...if they go down then i make an easy £105 profit....worth a punt i suppose.

If there wasn't so many other rubbish teams then it would be a good bet. But there are at least 10 other teams easily as bad as Newcastle.

maths fail, yet again, i dont know why you keep on betting when you dont understand how it works lol

over £200 is it not?

Shame he got the sack really I thought he had done a good job and they seem to be doing ok at the moment. Dont really understand the owners reasons for getting rid.
