Newcastle Upon Tyne Pubs

Was that near Luckies?

Always used to kick off an evening during their happy hour.

I remember it was always a nightmare buying a round because they didn’t reduce the price of a pint, as such, you just got a pint and a half for the usual price so when you were in a group of 5 & it’s your round….

Not complaining though :-)
Lol luckies in Mary's place on the corner , that was another go to bar , bottles of grolsh , was mortle after a half dozen of them.
Got barred from there for fighting.
It might even have been in happy hour when it was 2 for 1

Barley Mow
Changed name to something else that I can’t remember, then kept burning down. Still didn’t improve the place after wrecking what was the Barley!

It’s still a shell I think… gets torched again every few years maybe, someone probably thinks it’ll be a nice fixer upper, or redeveloped somehow.

EDIT: make that a shell with trees growing from it!

Was called Stereo in the early 2000s.

There was a proposal for an office building but I assume no funding for it.

Hello fellow Blaydonite! It really is a small world.
I'd never appreciated just how many Newcastle-based posters we had on here.

I remember it as the Fog & Firkin growing up, then Stereo.

Given it's an 18th century building I wouldn't be surprised if it is listed, hence the 'fires'.

Surprised it hasn’t been “Odeoned”!

It was not a great bar though!

Great name, crap bar, standard. There's an opposites thing that goes on with bars: great name=bad bar, LOLwhatname=great bar. Not scientific but there we go.

fake e: The last time I went to Newcastle was to buy a DAT machine* from Richer Sounds because the Edinburgh branch didn't stock them. I think that was 1993.

* ask your dad!

Why is no one able to spell "Bigg Market" correctly in this thread?

It's like when you see locals saying they are going to "Teeside". There is evern a road sign near Wheatley Hill which says "Teeside".

Makes me cringe every time.

they don't make it here anymore so I doubt anyone cares

Yup.

It's made in Yorkshire now I think, I used to enjoy the odd bottle but after they moved the brewery I stopped, not drank the stuff in a very long time.

Funnily enough I rarely see it stocked locally in a few places, and while I'm from Newcastle I live Durham way currently.

most people probably boycotted it as soon as production moved some decades ago when production first moved to gateshead

probably get more of a reaction shouting "stella drinkers are wife beaters"

No doubt, but at least Gateshead was over the river.

Been awhile since I was part of the drinking/bar scene, Stellar was one of the cheaper "premium" lagers of a decent strength. I always preferred Kroner 1664, tastes like dishwater last I checked after the recipe changes to cut costs with the UK law shifts.

Newcastle was a beer desert in the 70’s with very little apart from Amber and Dryborough (Watneys) in most pubs. Those of us in the know were able to find Draught Bass, Cameron’s, Sam Smiths, McEwan and Vaux. The beer festival on the quay was a saving grace. Then it all changed for the better…

Back in the day it was “Reassuringly Expensive” (according to the ad) and was also 5.2% abv. Was my drink of choice until they started brewing it in Northampton and watered it down to 4.4%.

I’ve been told the watering down lowers the amount of duty paid but can’t help feeling it’s just so that Carlsberg can do one continuous run for Stella, Madri etc and just stick a different label on the bottle.
