Newcastle

Thanks for your help - I will be in a flat on quayside...pretty near the central station

Lived hear all my life, But seriousy the quayside is an awesome place to live congrats. Central station has loads of pretty descent bars next to it as well as the quayside itself.

Lots of brilliant resturaunt as well, My favorite one is called hannah hannahs which is an awesome japanese resturaunt that focuses on ten pan yaki type food at the end of stowel street (china town). You get your own chef and lots of entertainment, a lot of the rich and famous go there too but it still manages to withhold any pretentiousness.

Another one to maybe look out for is called noodo which is situated in an alley behind stowel street which you get to by going between the gap between the gate and tiger tiger (bar). Mainly ramen/sushi but extremely cheap, all fresh and most of all astes awesome.

On more I quite like is red mezze next to st james park. Turkish food but tastes good, Youve no idea what a kebab is actually like until you go somewhere like that hehe ;)

But yeah plenty of night life, shopping, food. Its just genrally all around a good city.

As mentioned above as well you have the gate which has a load of bars and resturaunts in it as well as an empire cinema at the top. Or the metro centre which is about 10 miles if not less from where your staying which is huge. Metro centre also has an awesome odeon imax cinema in it now which was a new addition to the place when they renovated it.

Public transport is also pretty good in the area, the metro works well, however the only drawback is there is three bus operators in the area (stagecoach, Arriva and GoNorthEast) so can make travel a bit of a pain say if your going anywhere like durham and its surrounding areas as you have to buy multiple tickets. Other than that it works fine generally.

Hope that helps.

12 mins to Longbenton from Central Station on the metro, not too bad. :)

Newcastle is amazing, but depending on your tastes you'll be interested in different areas. There is an iMax cinema in the Metro Centre in Gateshead, and the entire centre is monstrous. There's another large shopping centre slap bang in the centre of Newcastle.

When it comes to nightlife there are several distinct areas. The Biggmarket for your total neds (Thurs-Sat at least), the Gate which is basically an indoor complex, think shopping centre but it only has bars and restaurants, which is for your slightly more affluent neds. The Diamond Strip which is where a lot of your 'trendies' will go, then there's a few rock bars dotted about the place. The quayside is not what it was for nightlife, everything has moved closer to Central Station. Osbourne Road in one of the affluent parts of town is great for Sunday afternoon sessions. Tynemouth at the coast is really nice too. Whitley Bay if you want to pull a disease ridden skank. :p

Local football and rugby teams to go watch, loads of free museums and art galleries in town such as The Laing, The Baltic, The Hancock and The Discovery Museum. Really friendly people, great takeaways etc. You'll enjoy it.

cool thanks guys. I'll be in Longbenton - won't have a car so I guess best way is the metro?

If your in longbenton your pretty close to a bus terminal and a metro station. From there you can get almost anywhere so travel shouldn't be too much of an issue.

While your up here its defiantly work checking out the nightlife in town, but be warned its fresher week this week so there's 18 year olds all over the place. If your after just a nice bar in town then there's one called Bacchus which is a nice bar but quite pricey for town.

If you wanna know anything then fire away, I don't live too far away from longbenton myself.

Edit, if you work in longbenton and live in central its an easy trip there but it'll be a few changes on the metro.

i know for a fact half the idols staff go down that way on a regular basis!

i bet its worse than the bigg market :D , btw dont forget to go aspers casino everyday for your free stamp aahahahahahahah

I'm off out around Central Station myself on Friday night, then make my way up past The Gate to Haymarket for the bus home. Northumberland Street and Eldon Square are great shopping centres, just google some of the places mentioned by people on here and check out google maps for proximity to where youwill be staying.

I've lived in Newcastle.. or just outside it.. for the length of my life so far :D

If your appartment is near central station then as mentioned above your smack bang in the middle of everything.

You will be 5 mins walk from majority of things.. I'll break it down for you:

Work

If your working near Longbenton then I'd probably use the metro for the first few months until you get used to the area. There is a metro station in Longbenton itself.. and there is a metro at central station too.. It would be 7 stops on the yellow line. It would take about 15 - 20 mins and cost about£4 for a day return. Monthly passes are available too.. at about £46.50 a month or £475.00 annually.

I'm not from up that end so I'm not sure about the road travel..

Shopping

You will be around 5 mins from Northumberland Street and Eldon Square.. these are the main areas in Newcastle itself for shopping. They have outlest like HMV, John Lewis, Fenwicks, Apple, Debenhams, Game and Boots.

There are also shopping around the street surrounding that area and down towards central.. these are still quite big brand name shops but there are some bespoke smaller businesses too.

If you want to go a little further afield then you have the Metro Centre in Gateshead which was until recently one of the biggest shopping malls in Europe. This is full of large brand shops and places to eat, also it is the only place in the north east you will find an Imax cinema.
The metro centre can be accessed via the metro but requires a transfer ticket and a stop at the gateshead station to board a shuttle bus.

A little further is Durham which also has a smaller shopping district.. not been there much myself so not sure what is there.. This can be accessed via the central station rail ilnes.

Socialising

This is where Newcastle really comes into its own.

There are a ton of bars etc around town but these are pretty much split into commonly known areas.

The Gate

Big glass fronted structure.. has a few food joints in there like TGI Firdays, Frankie and Benny's and Ask. Bar wise it has a few at the front called Above and Bananatynes.. and a nightclub towards the back called Mood.
On the third floor there is an Empire cinema.

Big Market

Chav central.. fully of them looking for a ruck. Fully of dance music and 80's music. Cheap drink but a good possibility that you will get a black eye or two.
There is an Indian restaurant and from what i know Newcastle's only Greek Restaurant.

Diamond Strip

This runs from central station down to the Big Market.
This road had bars called Revolution (Vodka Bar), Florita's. Tokyo and Perdu.
Lasses dress to the eyeballs, fake tan, lashes and no clothing.. but to counter act this your hit with spice boys. Blokes who also self tan and work out loads so they can wear tight jeans and v neck tshirts.

Osbourne Road

Jesmond area... a long road with loads of bars and a few restaurants.
Popular with students and always rammed on a bank holiday.

Whitley Bay / South Shields

Both of these have loads of bars and also are located by 2 of the best beaches in the area. Also rammed on a bank holiday.

South Shields can be rough.. I can say that as I live there lol.

Both have a few canny restaurants too.

Durham

A bit out of the way but still a canny might out.. a couple of good bars like the champagne bar.. and one of the best asain restaurants around here in the Fat Buddha.

A few bars worth a mention are Popollos and Bar Luga.. great bars with good drinks menus.

Eating Out

A few places worth a mention:

Sachins - www.sachins.co.uk

Top of my list everytime.. Punjabi cuisine..
Amazes me everytime I go.. friendly staff and decent prices.

Based at the top of the quayside behind central station.

Sabatini's

Small Italian on the quayside.. almost directly under the tyne bridge.
Again the food is outstanding and the prices a very good.

Marco Polo

A very nice Italian at the bottom of Grey street.
Been as few times and the food has always been great.

And now for the most important thing...

Clothing!

It is FREEZING up here.
Winter last year was insane.. minus 14 in some places I was working (I too am a contrator.)

If your likely to work in warehouses then your gonna need a thermal boiler suit or some thermal socks and boxers.

Otherwise a thick pair of jeans + Tshirt and jacket should do you fine for most days.

People generally are pretty nice up here as long as you approach them in a friendly way.. but geordies are quick to react angrily if you speak in the wrong tone.

I'm sure I've forgetten stuff but I'm sure other people will add stuff :D

Cold?
Nah. Was a bit nippy during the snow, but it only really dropped to around -7 or so through the night.
Ive been camping in worse :p.
Living on the coast, the wind can be biting though!

Remember:
Geordies - Newcastle
Mackems - Sunderland
Sand Dancers - South Shields

If anyone asks if you a mackem, deny it. No matter what. Under no circumstances even allude to being one. Sand dancers are neutral.

Ill say Im Geordie over Mackem if the question arises. Far as Im concerned I live on the Tyne, not on the wear! :)
Same, if I'm out the area people always assume im a Geordie. Even here at work in Hartlepool, I'm known as the Geordie one.

Yep I'm a Shields lad and definitely no Mackems for me, should wall the place off as far as I am concerned and make it a prison like Escape from New York. Government could fit plenty of prisoners in Sunderland.

Forgot to mention about the footie!

Just say your from down south tbh.. say you support someone outside of the premier league and many people won't even know what ur on about!

Also forgot about the biggest nightclub in the area..

Digital.

Its by the center for life.. just up from the cantral station..
It gets roudy every now and again but generally speaking it caters for almost all music types over various nights of the week.

By the speaking in the wrong tone thing I meant the way people are quick to fly off the handle if they disagree..

But if you stay away from the big market and your a good judge of character then you'll be fine :)

If I can think of anything else I'll add it in.. and if you have an questions my mail is in trust :)
