"Next day delivery" - up to 9pm?!

DEAR PEOPLE WHO WANT STUFF DELIVERD TO THEM.

SHOULD WE DELIVER FOR LONGER OR SHORTER HOURS BECAUSE YOUR MESSAGE IS BASICALLY CONFLICTING AND THIS COSTS US A LOT OF MONEY TO DO A THING WHICH YOU SEEM TO NOT LIKE BUT THE WHEN WE OFFER LESS SERVICE YOU ALSO GET annoyed. SO WHICH IS IT?

YOURS,
PEOPLE WHO DELIVER CRAP TO YOUR HOUSE.

I actually ordered from thisispulp.Co.uk, the message above was a direct copy from the email I was sent. Thisispulp is a subsidiary of sports direct :p

Similar problems with Rainforest site recently. A while ago they switched from using Royal Mail to their own logistics company.

These days you have to click on the box in your address input that says whether it's residential or commercial. If you don't they assume it's residential. Residential delivery is up to 9pm and includes weekends.

Around the beginning of october I ordered a book and a CD, using an old address input in the days when they still used Royal Mail. As it happens it's my work address.

First deliver attempt on a Sunday. 2nd after office hours. I get emails 3 minutes apart saying they couldn't deliver the CD and then another saying it had been handed to a 'resident'. I then contact them to tell them it's a commercial address and delivery must be on a weekday during office hours (it's blindingly obvious to anyone turning up that it's an office).

"Sorry sir, we can't change the address category. We can add a note on the package itself advising delivery time but the courier won't see it until they attempt to deliver it", As there is no sign of the CD, they refund it.

Cue more delivery attempts of both the CD and the book on Saturday and Sunday. I contact them again to have the book diverted to my home address. I tell them I don't expect to have the CD delivered as it's been refunded.

Move on to yesterday. The CD is delivered at home, at lunchtime on a weekday. The book has been returned to sender as it is 'undeliverable'. <sighs>

If anyone else uses them, make sure the appropriate box is ticked on the delivery address.

I deliver for Amazon Logistics.
The first thing I do is check through my route and deliver all the businesses and schools first... Simples!

To be fair though, they give us far too many packages (often 200+) and 90% of the time they put the businesses at the end of the route. I use my time to then sort my route out so I do the businesses first, something I shouldn't have to do.

Or you could just do the route in reverse if all the business are at the end? :D

That would take longer because I'd have to manually select each one for navigation instead of just click next. Doesn't sound much, but an extra 1 min 180 times is an extra 3 hours on my day.

Is this yodel?! This is what they do all the time! Next day delivery is not really next day, first day they will card you with an invisible card after "attempting" to deliver! The next day they will hopefully deliver it at around 5-6 pm.. Useless company! The more business use DPD the better!

I don't understand how difficult it can be to check whether an address is business or not! Mine is particularly obvious, too...

how long would it take in man hours to google hundreds of thousands of addresses every day and try to figure out if its a business?

cause that would probbaly end up costing more than their company fuel bill.

I don't mind the 9pm deliveries.

What I find "old-fashioned" is the lack of delivery slots.

DPD have spoiled me.

Now the thought of waiting around from 8am to 9pm too scared to go and do a poo incase the doorbell rings is a massive pain. Dedicated 1hour time slots should be common place now.

Or even just a GPS based text notification "Your parcel is X miles away, and will be with you within the next hour".

Yes most Yodel couriers are on peanuts but unless your utter crap at your job theres no excuse for being out at 9pm.
I worked for hermes for a couple of months when other work was slow and within a week you know your area and even with a heavy day your home by 4.

I think the opposite, potential post 18.00 orders are far more inconvenient for people who work, at least if you know the delivery is going to be made in office hours, it's a safe bet to order to work, if you get a delivery window of 7 am - 9pm then you're basically forced to take a day off work. At least inform the customer what it's going to be before they place the order, or even give them a choice of delivery windows

are many places happy with you ordering to work our place would lynch you for it.

Not all businesses close at 5pm though, so if they didn't attempt and you were working until late you would probably create a thread complaining your package hadn't arrived.

Can't win.

Why wouldn't they attempt? I'm suggesting they schedule deliveries to business addresses before 5pm, not fail to deliver at all. This can't be a problem unsolvable by modern technology.

Why are they googling every address? Just an educated guess will do in, I would guess, about 99% of cases. And they could end up saving a lot from not having to make second and third delivery attempts...
