Next England Manager? Next England Captain?

I've seen mention that Alan Pardew is amongst the favourites with the bookies. If he does get the job and times it right then England might have a chance i.e. his teams seem to play fairly well for say 6-7 games in a row then go into relegation form before a rebound just prior to the end of the season and stay up. If he is appointed at the right time England might just benefit from being on the upswing of what appears to be a fairly predictable cycle. The problem is then needing to ditch him before he ruins the next qualifying campaign. Still, it could be very entertaining for a while.

If Pardew could fix motivational issues he'd likely be a pretty damn good manager.

When Palace had to play well to stay up the year he joined they were pretty fantastic. They were 5th after 19 games last year which really shouldn't be overlooked, even with other teams royally screwing up they had a good points total after 19 games. But like Newcastle did that one season, after they were 5th at the half way point they clearly had a... we won't stay here to the end of the season, we won't get into europe so we have nothing to play for mentality.

A couple games to break out of that this season and their form has improved again. He seems to be able to get the team playing well, but once they realise there isn't much to play for after a great first half of a season making it 95% certain they'll stay up, it's like the team completely gives up.

That could work for England as unlike a league, the motivation to win is always there, there isn't even a second place trophy. When they have something to play for his teams seem to play great, when they are safe they give up but England will effectively never be safe in a knock out competition.

I don't think he's right, I don't much care for England or international football but for me, bring in someone who has been successful in international football, be that an ex player or a manager of a successful team. Bring in experience and stop randomly picking the best(of the not very good) English managers.

I think Pardew might be amongst the best choices if the FA insist on going for an English manager, but I think that is a choice that needlessly hurts the team.

Perhaps we can offer British passports to the entire Iceland team and coaching staff and have done with the never-ending farce that is the England team.

I mean if you're going to do it, do it right! :D

Well, **** me. The FA need look no further, looks like the FA have a mastermind ready and waiting in good old Mr. Reliable Southgate.... cracking looking team he has picked there.

I mean I for one can not wait to see Glen Johnson back in an England shirt, Stoke's defence has been nothing short of outstanding so far this season... and Oxlade-Chamberlain, the shining light of Arsenal's substitute bench.

Look out Malta, you're in for a thoroughly good lesson of dynamic sideways passing!

I can feel the excitement oozing out of me with that appointment.

He did well with his four games in charge, apparently, another 4 years of dross awaits.

In fairness, I wouldn't expect much more with a different manager so may as well go with the cheap option.

What possible reason is there to give out 4 year deals? 2 years would have been more than enough with England having an option for 2 more. Crazy.

I'll have a lot of respect for him if he sends Rooney packing, he's already announced his retirement and it's not like he puts in Ronaldo'esque performances. I suspect he's just another over-payed FA stooge though.
