Next England Manager? Next England Captain?

They'd never do it but I'd give it to Hoddle, this isn't a management job, this isn't club football, this is about getting the best group of players and moulding them into a team. He's already proven he can do that and if he'd kept his mouth shut would never have been sacked the first time around. We seem to be at a bit of a crossroads, younger managers like Southgate and Howe aren't ready. Older managers like Allardyce, Redknapp and Steve Bruce have already been overlooked, can't see them going back to them. The alternative is another foreign manager and I can't think of anyone available, or anyone stupid enough to want the job, who is any better than what we have.

As for captain, it has to be taken from Rooney, I can't remember seeing one occasion in the entire tournament or in recent time that he has actually done anything remotely captain like during a game. It needs to be someone vocal, needs to be someone reliable and needs to be someone the other players respect. Looking down the list of players we have, or have had in recent squads, there really isn't anyone who meets those requirements. I would have said Hart but he has been so poor I'm not sure that's sending out the right message. From what's left, I'd have to say Smalling as surely he's going to be in the team for at least the next 6 years alongside Stones.

Hoddle! Dear god no the man is as much a dinosaur as Roy and with better players at his disposal he still failed as England manager oh and his crazy beliefs do him no favours what so ever and can't exactly be put back in Pandora's box!

Smalling is probably a good shout for Captain he is bound to be heavily involved for the next few years at least and hasn't utterly disgraced himself at this tournament.

How is he a dinosaur? He's hardly old and he's been working as a coach for years since he was effectively stigmatised, you only need to listen to the players he's worked with over the years to tell how good he is at this. His crazy beliefs are a non issue now, they'd never let him anywhere near the media without everything planned out and written in advance anyway. He should be judged solely on his ability as a coach and he's about the best we have.

I don't think Cahill is good enough i'd rather see Stones start ahead of him,

Have you actually ever seen Stones play? If he'd started for England we would have played even deeper as everyone would have been ****ing themselves for what he did next. He's been terrible for a long while now. I have no idea how he got near the squad and that's from an Everton fan.

It doesn't matter who is England manager. International football is dead, this whole tournament is pub football compared to CL football. The players stopped caring years ago. CL killed International football in England. They will cry off friendlies and then play four days later for their clubs.

No manager will change that to gel a team these days.

Remind me how well his last two jobs in management went? There is a reason he hasn't managed a club in so long. His time is gone and even if he never mentions his beliefs again they are out there and can never be overlooked much as dodgy corrupt redknapp should never manage England it's just not right.

What needs to be done in my eyes is to sack of the culture of who is the best player in the league in each team and choose them. Sounds mad but we need a team not a collection of individuals.
If two players play better together but one of them is not considered the best midfielder then the better person must be conceeded to the bench for the sake of the formation. I seem to remember we did a lot better when most of the players were from Manu and Liverpool, I am assuming because they knew what the others were like.

More needs to be done about making this team train together. If that affects the prem then so be it. We have for many years as far as I can tell, Been taking 11 tactically different players from 5/6 rival teams and trying to glue them together as a unit in the space of about a month..

Hasn't worked and won't work.

It might sound completely nuts but I think there should be more games from the England team against home sides or div1 sides etc for practice.

We had the youngest side at the euros, but frankly I don't see that many of them should have that chance again unless they grow in the next year before the qualifiers.

God no. There's already enough pointless friendlies in the season as it is. International football is nothing compared to club football.

And regarding your other point, who would you have picked then? We had a core of 2 Spurs midfielders and a striker and that didn't help at all.

I can't really say who I'd have picked cause I only know them for their worth in a club game. That's my issue. Maybe Sturridge really just can't work out what the hell the Spurs guys are doing and maybe Rooney could never work out why Kane didn't run onto his passes, like his teammates.

OK I conceeded that the pointless games is a silly idea but for teams to play well at this level they need to have a 6th sense on the pitch.

I'd choose Redknapp as much as people hate him, in theory myself included being he's judus to me, but he sure knows how to get the right man in the right position for the right job.

There won't be any significant reforms outside of some lip service by FA, may as well save some money and just get someone who's cheap to coast through qualifiers and fluff tournaments.

Agree we have enough international football what we need is a manager with a plan who picks his best team and sticks with it. The reason we looked so disjointed this summer is that Roy decided to go with a formation and line-up that he'd never used before!

Germany have a system and they stick to it across all age groups so any player coming in knows his job and what is expected of him!

Club management means absolutely nothing at international level. He's proven his worth there already, has the backing of several experienced international players and is more than good enough in my eyes. I'm fully expecting a Gareth Southgate appointment and another failure in two years time, if we even qualify.

Lol name me a successful international manager who isn't a good club level manager?

Lowe is doing just fine.
Didn't have a career as a club manager really, the 1 or 2 teams he did manage ended up relegated or fired.

Although I'm not arguing the point at all, as I neither disagree or agree. I just happened to think that was a good answer :D

They popped off a list of them the other night actually, players who's first jobs were at international level and did surprisingly well. I just don't think using club level management success is a good indication of how well they will do at international level.

First job is different then your including people like Mark Hughes who go on to have successful club careers. Hoddle's last two jobs in football management were abject failures and he holds beliefs incompatible with such a high profile role. Added to which listening to and watching him at the euro' she seems to have aged massively badly given that he isn't actually all that old.
