They've not taken that much of the market, still a long way behind XBox1 sales. It shuld easily reach xbox1 sales but I am unsure how much more sales they can expect. The US is about the only country that buys the Xbox360 in sufficient numbers. Certainly in Japan it is a big failure. And the european market is actually growing ahead of the US market and in the Euro zone the Wii and PS3 do better than the Xbox360. Sales of the Xbox360 have been gradually dropping from its peak, where as the PS3 and Wii are gaining monthly sales.
MS have to keep the sales force going, otherwise it will fail to make the 25 million mark. And it needs at least that many sold to make any profit this generation.
I expect a price cut on the Xbox soon to try and increase sales.

totally agree, long, long way to go yet
People on about the Wii2 I just dont have any faith in Nintendo to produce a true gaming console, the gamecube was average, the wii is average in terms of power and game, either they go down the wii route and just beef it up or make a whole new gaming console.
They took a massive share of the PS2 market, have a look at game sales and you'll see they took a big piece.
If you're looking at markets, Japan is the least important of the 3 anyway, although Microsoft would like it, they don't necessarily need it. It's their loss anyway.
I do think they'll sell around 7 million consoles in 2 years though...

.I doubt it considering how well the Wii is selling. They will update earlier than the other though. This will give them a year or more (perhaps up to 2 against PS4) head start on sales, and during this time it will have the best gfx.
With the success of the Wii and DS they can take bigger risks next generation
They need to make the Wii cheaper though to get more money, they don't make money from games sales because lets face it, nobody buys Wii games they just stick with Wii Sports and maybe Wii Play/Mario Galaxy.
Ok So maybe we won't see the 'Wii 2' but we will get a redesigned, cheaper to produce Wii - That you can bet on.

How was the Gamecube average? It was probably the best console technically of the last generation. It was very powerful, a lot more so than the PS2 and on terms with the Xbox- it produced the best looking game of the last generation. It was small, quiet, power lean, reliable and cheap. Despite having some of the best hardware they were making proifit on consoles from day one, soemthing MS and Sony took a long long time to acheive.
One could say the Xbox was slightly more powerful, and was definitely better equiped for online, but it was still an inferior console really.
Step back a generation, the N64 was several times more powerful than the PS1

They need to sell more like 10-12 million more in less than 2 years fr any real profits to be made. There need to be enough time for software sales to cancel the big debt produced by the console sales.

Wii: 2,397,520
360: 1,482,506
PS3: 885,058
The Game attach rates for the 3 console overall:
PS3: 0.0987 games/console.
360: 0.0908 games/console.
Wii: 0.1216 games/console.
And for games sales last week, nintendo claim the top 11 most sold games, with 5 Wii Games.
The top 2 Wii games Sold 458,346 and 263,601 games. The top 2 PS3 OR 360 games sold: 111,782 and 104,237. Even Nintendo 5th best selling game outsold the top PS3/360 game. SMG outsold the top 2 best selling 360/PS3 combined.
The rumour of wii owners only buying 1-2 games is force, however you look at it. Games like Super Mario galaxy outsell any other non nintendo game out there.
And we haven't even seen Wiifit sales yet

Surprising numbers that I wasn't aware of, I take back what I said then, Still I think they need to make the Wii cheaper to produce which is why I'm expecting a redesigned Wii in the not too distant future, Nintendo are very clever with redesigns.
Just to add - I'm 100% certain that Wiifit will be the no.1 selling game next year too, probably followed by GTA4.
I wouldn't mind the new Xbox being released any time soon, just so long as MS keep the 360 going like Sony have with the PS2.
With more powerful machines there's more developers can do so i'm guessing games would take even longer to develop ? maybe the developers should be given longer with the nexgen console hardware in future ?

Playstation 4 and Xbox 720? 1000? 3200?
I think we need new names for the next MS and Sony console.
I mean Nintendo have been innovative with their names.

Microsoft could probably pull off a console with a name change though. As Microsoft don't put out much hardware of that kind.
