*** Nexus 10 Tablet ***

So, rooting! Mainly want to do this just to get Cerberus installed after reading the last thread about that! Even though it doesn't have a sim card, given how much it cost it seems like a pretty smart idea to have something like that installed, just in case. To be honest, that's probably all I'd use the root for to begin with, since I think I'm fairly happy with the tablet as it stands, at least for now. I've never been one for messing about with UIs unless there's a massive advantage to using a custom one.

But... how do I do it? I've found some programs which claim to be root tooklits which do all the work for you, can these be trusted? Or are these programs likely to slide in all sorts of nasties into my tablet as well?

Wugs nexus toolkit is what you want.

I have unlocked and rooted a N10 and N7 with it, extremely easy.

I havent installed a custom rom, after 4.2.2 everything is so stable anyway, I might try PA when we have a good 4.2.2 build.

Just to whet your appetite a bit about what else you can do with root, my most used apps:
Hiding the statusbar for more usable screen
Great PA rom style pie menu
SMB server
Screen standby to switch the screen off when using HDMI
Datasync to sync game progress between phone and tablet

All rooted, huzzah! Cerberus installed, hidden away, though no idea what good it will do me. At least it gives me the option of a remote wipe if someone does run off with it.

Wow, just played some real racing 3 and then jumped straight into about 15 minutes of nfs most wanted, the graphics started stuttering and then the tablet rebooted itself. The thing was incredibly hot... eep

Planning on getting one of these in the near future but have some questions.

Is it possible to play large MKV's? I have a lot of blue ray rips on my network that I will want to watch on the nexus 10. How is playback?

Is it possible to tether it to a smartphone? I currently have a samsung galaxy S and the contract is up at the end of april so will probably be getting the new s4 when its released. I know you can setup tethering with the s3 just trying to future proof as possible.

What are educational apps like and can people recommend some for a 4 year old.

1) How large are these MKVs? Biggest I tried is 1080p 11gb and BS player plays it fine over LAN.

2) Yup, tethering to a smart phone works with no problems, almost all phones these days supports tethering, but it's up to your network if they allow it.

3) Don't know any educational apps, might be best to ask here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18129993

Most are 7gb to 13gb or so but I have a couple that are over 20gb. Planning on getting the s4 on a contract with the one plan with three so tethering shouldnt be a problem. What are the advantages of the 32gig over the 16gig? it is worth the extra £70? although the 32gig are out of stock atm.

If you're planning to mainly browse websites and stream video then 16gb should be fine.

I have played mkvs of 15gb and they seem ok.

is it possible to use some form of USB OTG with the nexus 10? I have a 1tb external drive that I could fill with movies and use that when on holiday, and I could purchase a cheap 32gig usb stick to watch the odd movie from?

Yes, you will need to use the nexus media importer app on the market or root.

thanks for the quick reply skyfall, can you steam stuff from the usb stick? or drive as it where? or do I need to copy it to the device first? the reason I am asking is I will go for the 16gig if I can stream from the stick/drive.

Yes you can, but as Skyfall mentioned, you need to use this app or root your tablet for the free alternatives.

The drive also needs to be formatted in FAT32 for the Nexus to read from it.

Great I just ordered myself the 16gig version and will get a cheap usb drive from amazon with the OTG cable now. Hmm, FAT32 has the 4gig file size limit? I was hoping I could put some MKVs on the usb and take them with me for holidays perhaps that might not be a good idea now but meh I need a new flash drive anyway.

Just got on 3's one plan and tether to the n10 from a Sony xperia Z, their HSPA+ connection is super fast! I racked up over 8gb of data usage on the first day and haven't eased up. So far a massive improvement over my old vodafone plan.

I stream mkv films from a little home server, must admit I'm forever having audio sync issues though, generally I find the android media players poorly handle these media files. I've tried dice, MX and vlc player and each one seems to have their own bugs.
It would be cool to know what works best for other people.

I am just hoping I can get it all setup and use it out and about when I go away it will be nice but if the s4 is good then I might be able to leave the tablet at home but we shall see. Tethering is free with three so I am just hoping I can get a nice contract for the s4 since my old galaxy 1 is starting to get old now :p

Finally got a case, went for the Poetic Slimline, lovely fit, feels quality, would recommend it to anyone.

Have had my nexus 10 for less than a week, and am loving it! Decided to go with a poetic case which didn't seem to fit. One corner kept popping out, seems like some of the recent reviews on the rainforest report a similar issue. Bit annoyed by the lack of official accessories, the smart cover on my gf iPad is awesome, I wonder when we'll get something similar for the nexus.

I've been reading through this thread and am just wondering whether there is an option to do full screen browsing with chrome. I had 4.2.2 installed as standard which does away with the standard browSer.

I've rooted the tablet to get GMD control, and will be shortly downloading lmt. Any must have apps recommended for a rooted nexus 10
