*** Nexus 5 THE Official Thread ***

What are people thinking of replacing their Nexus 5 with?

I bought mine on the first day of Nov 2013 and am getting bored of it now. I usually change phones every year. Previous two phones were Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. Lollipop has been a disaster so far as well with the annoying memory leak.

Upgrades now available for me with contract end date in March, but can't find anything worth replacing the Nexus 5 with. I don't like phablets (rules out Nexus 6).

Why would you replace it?

Switch to a cheaper contract and wait a year or two for something worthwhile to come out.

Phones aren't purely about utility for me. They are also toys and who doesn't like new toys.

Was looking at the Z3 Compact, but sadly still a step down in screen quality.

Contracts are usually irrelevant anyway, I've been on sim only for 2 years, but sometimes you can negotiate good deals.

I'd love to replace my n5 with something new but I just can't find anything that I like :) 5.5" screens are a no go for me and I won't be carrying a huge bum phone in my pocket! And sadly, every maker thinks that 5'5"+ is the perfect size! Grrrr

I only got mine in October last year so I will obviously be keeping mine a while. Given the way Android is updated by Google each year, it seems to be a goo choice and a phone of a right size. I can't imagine carrying around a Nexus 6 - just too big.

Maybe next year Google will come up with a replacement for the Nexus 5 - something of the same size.

5.5" isn't the perfect size for me. Nex5 has the dimensions spot on. Nex6 specs in a nex5 chassis would have been a better idea. A 6" phone is ridiculous.

I'll be keeping my nex5 for another year definitely.

Around November I jumped to the HTC One M8 as it was on offer at Vodafone, loved the front speakers and better battery life over the n5 but wanted a large screen and so when it was upgrade time on my two year old iPhone contract I plumped for the Note 4. The screen is nice although I have it set to the basic color profile instead of the over saturated default mode. Being as thin as it is makes it easier to hold (without a case) despite the general width and height . Outside of work this has now become my primary screen hence going for the larger screen without going for a tablet as well as a phone.

I'm currently installing cyageonmod onto my nexus after sucessfully reverting back to 4.4.4 Kitkat. I hate the new lolipop, is anyone else using cyageonmod or stock+root?

Edit:

So far I'm really happy with cyanogenmod 11, it has those extra options I hoped to see in 4.4.4 kitkat from stock. :)

My nexus 5 is getting really bad battery drain. I have seen on a few sites that it could be the email client keeps trying to sync, I checked on the accounts menu and the accounts synced and it seemed like it was flickering and trying to continuously sync. I have deleted then re entered the settings.
Could this be a reason my battery is running down quickly?

There's a handy app in the Play Store that might help you. - Snapdragon Battery Guru. It works in the background to save battery while the phone is not in use. Since it's free it might be worth a try.

Kill running apps in the background and turn off mobile data/WiFi etc. For those who didn't yet updated to Android 5.x.x I would recommend staying with 4.4.4 Kitkat, from all the androids I tested (4.4.2+) this was the most stable and the battery life was pretty good.

My 5 is back with the repairers / well I say that loosely
camera was fixed, gps is still pants.
I did ask if they can actually fix it this time.
Wait and see I guess, I bet I get it back and they say "they flashed it" / cos that worked last time

what's the issue with your gps? i'm having issues lately where it just can't find where i am exactly for ages. takes maybe 5-10 minutes until it finds me on the road, and then often will happily lose me. figured this was a software bug not hardware

anyone know how to root without wiping data? mine was rooted and bootloader unlocked on 4.4 and i hadn't noticed the 5.0 update screwed this all up. my barclays app now thinks i have root, and i unforunately don't which i'd now like to use to copy and apps files.

only way i have found to root requires wiping the data but i only need root to copy some data on the phone so this isn't an option.
