***Nexus One Thread***

'Radio' is basically the software that runs the radio function of the phone, ie how the phone connects to the network. There's usually no reason to flash the radio unless an update has been released that gives significantly better reception or something.

The Kernel is the central part of the OS. Flashing different kernels on Android can bring overclocking support, power saving or other features. Most modded ROMs include modded kernels already of some flavour.

Cyanogen is the best Nexus ROM in terms of speed and stability but I've been running a custom kitchen MoDaCo Desire ROM for the past couple of weeks and it runs pretty well. Sense UI looks proper nice.

Sense is very nice but I got bored of it quickly, saying that I might try it out again in the next couple of weeks when I get more comfortable with rooting etc.

Looking for a stable CPU OC and stable UV, are they all for Cyanogen 5.0.6? Is this the latest one? [Kernel-.33.2!] OCed - UVed: -1.113Ghz Stable - 4/05 -8MB extra ram!

This is based of a newer kernel and may be freeing up 21MB of RAM, not sure. I've used this guys kernels before and they've never done me wrong, I'm currently using someone else's and I'm still not sure about it :/

Leave the radios, they're the only real risk while flashing, and they WILL cause a £400 brick if they go wrong, there are a few about, none seem to make any difference for me
 
How do you change the pulse colour on the track ball when you recieve an email.

I can't find an option anywhere, I found the ones for phone calls, text messages etc.

I use exchange for my emails btw but can't see an option.

Still at Uni, on their PC's, so MSN is out :( Silly exams :rolleyes:

The cyan trackball notifier is terrible, the gmail and email clients won't let you can the colour.

In the market gmail notifier will patch the gmail app, allowing any colour

The only option that does the regular email client is trackball notifier, or trackball notifier pro (The pro adds to the default mail/message clients with things like meebo and all the twitter clients for £1.99) however I can't make either work with a non-standard kernel :(

So basically you have to choose between an OC UV kernel or the ability to switch trackball colours

Personally I chose the former

BTW I found out why my phone was lagging so badly, it was defiantly SetCPU, I don't think it was scaling properly :rolleyes: I will see how not having it affects my battery life in the next few days

Right, well I've tracked my lag to Beautiful Widgets. Odd. Without it I'm back running a super UV, non OC kernel and some harsh cpu profiles with no problems.

Anyone know of a good clock widget substitute?
 
Dam! Was planning on getting a Nexus once it got released on Sprint sometime real soon. However, they came out today and stated that they are now not gonna be adding it to their line up because the Evo 4G is coming out. Now that looks impressive and all that, but the dam thing looks HUGE :(
 
I read that on Engadget. Evo4G is nice though. No use to us in the UK though.

I went into Carphone warehouse today and asked about the Desire on a 18 month contract. Unless I want to pay £40+ it's not a option.

Going to give it 3 months and then cancel with T-Mobile. I'm hoping they will give it to me on my current contract but I'm doubting it.

If you want a new top of the range phone today you have to take a 24 month contract or pay for the phone. I have a feeling the iPhone had pushed companies to do this.

What are you hoping to get the phone free on? I'm sure T-Mobile can offer it free on 18 months for £30 a month via retentions seeing as they gave much better deals on release.

Also the problem you are saying is because the iphone forced manufacturers to realise that people are willing to pay a lot of money for phones which do actually cost a lot to make. If HTC could have released a good touchscreen phone at sub £300, I'm fairly sure they would have done so. Sony Ericsson I'm sure are disappointed that they are having to sell the X10 at £450+.

The N-series smartphones weren't that cheap on release and had to be bought on 18 month £30+ a month contracts and this was before the iphone.

Yeah. Going to wait the 3 months and phone up and see if they can give me the Desire.

People want the iPhone and don't really care what a contract means. I had a friend who I took to Carphone Warehouse to look at phones. The guy managed to sell her a 24 month £35 contract iPhone 3GS. I told her when we got out that seeing at the longest she has ever had a phone for was 9 months that she had just done the most stupidest thing ever. But people are willing to do that. Because they are other companies can do the same and most people are none the wiser.
 
When is the official cradle going to be in the UK, I'm not paying £70 for it, but I'm getting desperate now lol, I don't like the other ones that are out aesthetically, and I need the audio jack as well as streaming Last.fm is a must have it to my AVR.

I was going to suggest a group buy off Google, to reduce the postage cost, but you can only order one of anything :( ie one phone, one desk dock, one car cradle and one spare battery, or any combination of the above. $25 for a battery is a bargain IMO.

Next person who orders of google.com/phone email me in trust first, and I'm sure we can come to some sort of arrangement (Profitable to you of course) ;)

To the guy asking about ordering off google.com/phone the difficult bits are making sure you have a Google Checkout account (Which you'll need for the Android market) and waiting for the DHL invoice, although some depots in the UK hold the parcel until you pay the VAT, rather than billing you 3 weeks later for VAT like they did to most of us :) (Remember you need to factor in the UK government will want to add 17.5% to the cost of you phone in VAT :( ) Another tip is to remove the UK charger google automatically adds the to basket and just buy one off Amazon for £5 as a posed to the $30 Google will charge you :)

On the flashing kernels front it varies hugely from Dev to Dev, some want you to push files, via ADB, to the phone (As a way of filtering out noobs who will break stuff because they don't understand the risks), others create .zips you can flash via recovery (The easier method). Stalk Kmobs on twitter, he's usually pretty good with his kernels and his are usually .zips to flash :)
 
it just seems hellishly expensive compared to ebay :x

I'm kind of edging towards this than a desire though, the light up circle is tipping it :P

LOL that's great and one of the reasons why I got the Nexus One, I prefer the no lip and the default digital android keys as well, the price sucks though but look around, I got mine from another forum brand new unopened for £330 so I sold my Desire for it.
