NHL

How much is it? I used to watch the NHL back in the day when it was on C5 late at night/early morning.

$160 for the season usually which is not bad considering you get every single game live and you can watch the replays as many times as you like. I paid around $49 for this shortened season. (Plus I bought an AppleTV to watch it on, you can use most things to watch it though)

A normal full season including playoffs was $160 before the lockout, cheaper this year with the condensed season (and so as to not annoy people any further ;) ). Then at around halfway through the season they knock the price down to half.

Even at full price personally it's fantastic value for the amount of time we spend watching games, at least 3 or 4 a week, so probably averages $2 a game or something silly.

I'd imagine with premier sports able to show 15 games a week the playoffs will have quite a bit blacked out, but as said previously there are very easy ways round that.

With free Gamcenter app you don't get the full length game replays, it'll either be the 3 minute highlights or the 10 min condensed versions.

UnblockUS seems to work with it.

I may take a look at gamecenter, I'm sat here watching my penguins at 11.30pm, don't really wanna stay up till 1am.

Yay another Pens fan!!

Die hard Flyers fan here.

Think i'll wait till next season

Probably for the best, I like the Flyers but they haven't been having a great season so far :p

I can't talk much though as I'm a Caps fan and they had a horrific start ;)

I've been to games over here but it's nothing like being at an NHL game. I've seen a handful of NHL games over in the US (only 5 or 6 and al but one of them at Verizon Center) and has always been good fun.

Think i'll wait till next season to see what NHL can offer me. I miss NASN, that was an awesome channel.

Pens and Flyers fans don't agree on much, but you're spot on with that! I miss that channel.

Awesome man, I went to Pittsburgh last xmas to watch a couple of games, damn good fun! What do you make of DC though? Verizon is a nice venue but the city, if you can call it that, just doesn't feel like one.

We quite liked it but know what you mean though, can't really explain it but totally see what you're getting at. I think that's maybe why we liked it though.

I think my wife's view of the city is very tainted (for the better) by the fact the hockey is there though, which isn't a bad thing, as she loves it.

We went for a week last year purely to go watch a string of home games (NJ, Flyers, Carolina and Tampa, they only won 1 lol), was an awesome week. Had the 4 games in DC, plus went along to a couple of the training sessions over at the Kettler rink.

All being well we'll do the same next year, and I'll be scheduling a work trip I've probably got coming up over to the US to coincide with some games as I'll be visiting Columbus and New York which is convenient to grab a game or two :)

Nice! Since about 2002 for me.

It's a nice enough place, people were really welcoming, being a Londoner and a dedicated Pittsburgh sports fan they lapped it up! However, I wouldn't go back, unless it was part of a road trip and it was a two day stop over. There's nothing to do there really, it's kinda weird that they've got a fairly big Macy's store there, yet is nowhere near as impressive as the Manhattan one. That could be because the city isn't a popular tourist destination like NY though.

I once went to see Hull Stingrays. Atmosphere was quite good but it really is small potatoes compared to the NHL.

It is but people over here don't give it a chance. I have supported both local football and local ice hockey since I can remember but I utterly loathe Scottish football and what it's become so I don't give it any more of my money. I put it towards watching the junior hockey team.

What I like about hockey over here are that the fans that go and watch it are passionate about their sport and the level of banter you get is hard to match. Football is full of "We won this 20 years ago, our team is better, yours is naff" but at ice hockey its more of a community. It has qualities you struggle to find elsewhere.

To be fair I think all of the Scottish teams have upped their game since the elite league. You have to remember two seasons ago we were playing against amateur teams and romping every game. Our record this season is up's and downs but there it's a good foundation to build on. The team we have this season could have been better. Lacking a bench coach for most if it doesn't help. But we've still pulled off some great wins. Beating Sheffield with Sestito in the lineup was a highlight along with hammering you lot a good few times. On the flip side i've also seen us play shockingly bad against the caps. Murrayfield is definitely our killer rink.

There is no question the NHL is better, can't compare it to us but we still have a great set of die hard fans and with more local authorities building rinks it can only get better for us as a sport.

I meant as in Fife Flyers :p. San Jose are my NHL team.

Might just have to add it to a trip to NY then. I only wanted to go Pittsburgh to see the hockey. :D

lewism, who's the coach up there now?

Todd dutaime but he's retiring at the end of the season. My money is on Danny Stewart to take on a player/coach role. However I'm hoping for a more suited role from him. We played well earlier on in the season when he was injured and took control of the bench. Line changes were much smoother.

I am a little confused as to why the pens have signed 3 x 30+ year olds this week. Are Malkin and Le Tang out for the long run?

Guess they are positioning for the playoffs, a contingency as such.

Plus Iginla whilst being 35 is still a good player and hopefully a shrewd move.

For a player like that age isn't as much of a bother, just look at guys like Jagr, Selanne etc. People were even saying the same about Ribiero when the Caps got him but he's been great for us.

Malkin is back in tonights game, Letang out for 2 weeks (ish).

Yep, they're going all in to win lord stanleys cup this year. If you saw them get knocked out by philadelphia last year, you'll notice they had no veteran presence, lacked grit and let their emotions get the better of them. Having those older guys around makes such a difference. See the 09 playoffs penguins team for a similar comparison to this year. They're THE team to beat now.

Last years Flyers Penguins games were great fun to watch, a stark contrast to the tight low scoring Caps playoff games of that series.

Forget which game it was but the one where it was just one long fight was a good watch, had hair pulling and everything ;)
