NHS=Negligent Health Service

Well, as a counterpoint to all the NHS doom and gloom...

I developed an abscess on my back a week ago. Got some antibiotics from the GP, but it has continued to get worse so went into Urgent Care over the weekend. OK the overall 4 hours total wait/assessment time wasn't great but could have been a lot worse.
Given a referral to the 'Surgical Assessment Unit' this morning, where I was seen within 15 mins of arrival, scheduled for minor surgery to drain it tomorrow, and had some blood taken for standard pre-op tests.
Back out of the door with my paperwork for tomorrow in <1hr.
This is at a large South London hospital which doesn't have the highest CQC ratings.

Hopefully all will go smoothly tomorrow, but so far - good job NHS!

All the best!

Been on the waiting list for kidney surgery for 2 years. I have 9 stones which are all too big for the external lithotripsy so they need to do a more “invasive” surgery.

Got called on the on 10th October to be told my operation date is Nov 6th, called on the 25th October to be told “sorry more urgent need” and rebooked for Nov 20th, called this morning to be told “sorry more urgent need” and Dec 6th it has been rebooked for.

Honestly, I lost it on the phone. I get it wasn’t their fault but it’s starting to really get to me.

Speak to PALS, the booking service won't have any power to resolve the issue but PALS (whilst annoying) will usually try and help.

Good luck!
The Mrs has within 8 weeks:
- Had her initial consultation about her back (Needs some bone removing from a vertebrae and potentially a diskectomy.
- Had the MRI and other requested scans
- Had the follow up consultation and promise to be on the 'list' for surgery (but may take 18 months+)
- Got a place in a private hospital (same consultant) funded by the NHS.
- Had the initial consultation there, had some opportune pre-surgery bloods done last week.
- Booked in for Weds this week for the Op!

The Hospital has a Good CQC with outstanding for care, good for everything else, so seems acceptable.

Pretty much when you need urgent care/surgery, the NHS have always stepped up for us..
I've required a few urgent diagnostics and between myself, the Mrs and the kids, we've found that they will always say you will be on a long waiting list, then miraculously within a day or so get a phone call for a 'cancellation' and offered a place quickly.. however I know its not a cancellation because when asked for convenient times, they seem to have a wide choice of dates/times and when you do go, it's like a ghost town, often being the only patient there.. In fact the only thing that has genuinely taken months is the superfluous stuff I normally pay privately for anyway, like physio..

Yeah, funnily enough the worst experience was the Wifes gall stones.. basically they had to get to a point she was in A&E for 3-4 hours passing out and drifting in/out of consciousness with the pain before they reluctantly decided to bump her op up in priority, but to be fair, that episode (A&E is pitiful, their triaging (or lack of) triaging was barbaric) made it obvious she needed it sorting quickly.

After my previous optimistic post (which presumably jinxed everything) my Op scheduled for this afternoon has just been cancelled :(
Nil by mouth all morning and all checked in, gowned up and ready to go when the surgeon came round and advised that 'two theatres out of action' and that all the lists today are being cut.
Possibility of being brought back in tomorrow, but on an 'admit you and then wait for a slot' basis, with no guarantee of when it would be done...

I understand completely how the NHS has issues but I recently had a medical for something that I am doing. GDPR 28 days to get my complete medical history. I phone after two weeks and get told it is going to take 28 days. Go into GP on the 28th day and they scrabble to get it ready because they obviously haven't done it. I was missing copies of pre digital media (I needed notes from a Hernia I had done in 1993)

Roll on my medical and I get white coat syndrome and have an abnormal high blood pressure. Have a 24/hour blood pressure from my GP monitor which comes back fine 120/80. I was actually surprised as I had that done within 2 weeks from request so top marks from my GP there.

Only then I have to do another GDPR request and wait another 28 days to get my results which they could have given me in 5 minutes.

All in all I miss 3 months of time that I could have used for training for a very trivial reason of basically bone idleness and people not doing their job.

yeah that sounds about right, not uncommon for patients with abscesses to come back 3 days in a row before it gets done...or bursts spontaneously

basically bone idleness and people not doing their job.
or is the true reason that there isn't enough people to do the job

I disagree the GP was fantastic and I got booked in straight away. It was about 10 days from having an appointment to getting another appointment with the kit fitted and returned to the GP the following day.

Then I had to request through GDPR for my detailed results which they would have had on the system and taken all of 5 minutes to print off. I am sure if I was able to have a follow up with my GP he would have printed them off there and then but I was unable to.

The issue from what I can see is a lack of accountability for whos job it might be and the only reason I got the results was because of the GDPR guidelines stating 28 days. Then magically they appeared.

In all seriousness, I hope you're sorted soon.

Cheers! Had a call yesterday and they given me a cancelled appointment for the 22nd November…

So that’s nice, this’ll be the 4th time I’ve had to rearrange everything at home/work so they better not cancel again ha

you could probably have registered for NHS app and just been able to get results that way for future reference given you weren't needing the full record you shouldn't be needing to do an SAR at that stage

I have NHS app but I just got a generic doctors report saying my blood pressure was fine and no further action needed. My other doctor that I was seeing needed my full detailed medical results to compile and take random readings from that in order to issue me a medical in accordance to the guidelines for that to prove I didn't have high blood pressure.

When I asked for this I was required to do a SAR again even though I did one in the previous month.

What a surprise, attempt #2 at getting surgery to drain my abscess didn't happen again today.

Having been bumped from my scheduled appointment yesterday, today was on a 'sit and wait to see if theatre slot becomes available' basis and I didn't get to the top of the list. Apparently being 'urgent, but not critical or life threatening' doesn't make the cut. The consultant told me that I could be asked to come back every day to wait on this basis until it's dealt with (or presumably until my own condition becomes 'critical or life threatening')

Apparently, the hospital management decided to close two of the operating theatres for maintenance, without discussing it with any of the consultants or considering any impact on scheduled operations or capacity for new admissions needing surgery.

Thankfully I have BUPA cover through work so decided to see if I could go that route - despite it not really being intended for non-elective/urgent treatment like this. I'm now booked in to have it done on Friday privately.

It's pretty sad that my post above was intended to reflect positively on the NHS, despite the title + much of the content in this thread - but all I've ended up doing is reinforcing how broken it is :(

yep, sorry i didn't want to burst your bubble in your original post

what irks me the most is that an abscess drainage, if uncomplicated, is really quick
and by quick, i mean the anaesthetic and procedure itself takes a whole 10-15mins tops!
and then we wonder why productivity and the general health of the country is going down the pooper...

everyone who works in the nhs knows that its back is well and truly broken, even as someone that works in the medical ivory tower (icu) such as myself

Well I finally got my abscess dealt with today privately under my BUPA cover.

Hopefully me going the private route has helped sometime else get theirs done a little quicker under the NHS.

The nice private room and a proper teapot + biscuits is an added bonus too, of course :D

Just hope that the minor surgery I have on Nov 19th goes ahead. As i originally had it booked last month when I was on holiday and the consultant even wrote down the dates I couldn’t do.

If automated booking systems could have some input by a member of staff - receptionist or a doctor to mention don’t book appointments between certain dates, unable to do Mondays etc then you will get fewer annoyed people

If you’re going to allow input from everyone listed of not Monday, not this date range, morning only it will snowball into a logistical nightmare. Besides, I’d have thought most requiring surgery or a procedure would be prioritising it over all else.

I do feel for people on th administrative side of the nhs, absolutely overworked and underpaid for what they’re expected to do.

I hope your surgery goes well.
